Women's Basketball Preview: Arkansas-Fort Smith and Harding

LAWTON -- The Aggie women's basketball team will start out their 2014-15 on the road with a pair of games, playing Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday and then Harding on Saturday. Cameron will have their hands full, as UAFS is always a tough opponent, and Harding was ranked number 15 in the Division II Preseason Coaches Poll.

A quick look at the Lady Lions: UAFS, who went 9-17 overall and 9-11 in conference last season, was picked to finish seventh in the Heartland Conference, while returning only four players from last years team. The game against the Aggies will be the first official game for the Lady Lions, but they had the luxury two play two exhibition games, beating Evangel University 81-52 and losing to Division I Mississippi State, 114-58. As a team, they shot 38 percent from the field in the preseason, making 24 percent of their shots from behind the arc and hitting 68 percent from the free throw line. Jasmine Brainard, Angi Ramey, and Maya Perry all averaged double digits in points during the two exhibition games, while Ramey averaged nine rebounds per contest.

A quick look at the Lady Bison: Harding went 29-3 last season and won 19 of their 20 games conference games, which led to them being picked as the favorite to win the Great American Conference. The #15 Lady Bison return three starters from last years team, one of whom is senior forward Montana Lewis, who scored 18 points in Harding's 85-81 exhibition loss to Division I Arkansas State. HU shot 47 percent from the field, 24 percent from behind the arc, and 76 percent from the free throw line against ASU. Before they face the Aggies, the Lady Bison will take on Christian Brothers for their first official game on Friday, Nov. 14.

Cameron's new look attack: Aggie fans will see a new look women's basketball team when they come out to the Aggie Gym this basketball season. The team returns seven players from last years squad, but only one of those was a true starter. CU went 13-14 last season with a 5-10 conference record, which was enough to earn them a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, where they were beat in the first round 64-53 by top seeded West Texas A&M. Cameron was picked sixth in the LSC preseason poll, and their top returner is senior Jazzmine Robinson, who led the team in scoring with 12.2 points per game last season, while being named ALL-LSC Honorable Mention. Also returning is one of CU's top three point shooters from last season, Jade Herl, who shot 46 percent from behind the arc and averaged 8.5 points per game last season.  

On the Horizon:  Cameron will continue their road stretch to start the season when they travel to Fort Hays State on Nov. 22 and then East Central Oklahoma on Nov. 25.
