Aggie softball splits double header with Newman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – The Cameron University softball team split a double header with Newman Friday in Canyon, Texas.

Cameron relied on a five run third inning and matched a Lone Star Conference record with four triples to take down Newman in game one 7-2.

Breezy McComas matched a program high with a two triples, with both Sonora Zukerman and Misty Dooley knocking in a three bagger each in the win.

The Aggies came out in front during the first inning with a run off a Macy McKay single up the middle to score Dooley.  However in the second, Newman plated a run off a single to even the score at one each.

Cameron dropped the hammer down in the third with six hits and five runs.  The Aggies had a pair of doubles and triples during the scoring outburst to lead 6-1.

Newman responded back with an unearned run in the fourth before Cameron knocked in the final run of the game off of an infield single by Carly Allerheiligen to take down the Jets 7-2.

Sam Betts (4-0) went the distance for CU in the circle with six strikeouts and only one earned run given up.

In game two, the Aggies got off to a quick two run lead, thanks to a two run Tara Martini homer that scored McKay. But that lead was erased in the bottom of the second as the Jets tied it on a two RBI triple. They added four more in the next inning, two being unearned runs due to a couple of Aggie errors.

Cameron started chipping away at the 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning as a throwing error by Newman's catcher scored Kolby Gray and got another run back in their half of the fifth via a Zukerman RBI double that scored Martini making it 6-4 in favor of Newman. The Aggies weren't finished, tying the game at six thanks to a 2 RBI single by McKay that scored Makenzie Burk and Allerheiligen.

Newman came right back in the bottom of the sixth and put two more runs on the board, one on another CU error, and took the lead 8-6. Despite a pinch hit single by Kelsey Watson, the Jets shut CU down in the seventh to win game two.

Watson (3-3) got the loss as she went all six innings for the Aggies, giving up five earned runs, on seven hits, with nine strikeouts.

Martini ended up 3-7 with three RBI and three runs scored, while McKay was also 3-7 with three RBI and one run scored.

Cameron now 9-4 on the season will return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader against Texas A&M International.
