Cameron women keep post season hopes alive with 63-59 win over Angelo State

Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas-- The Aggies used a balanced scoring attack to keep their playoff hopes alive, holding off Angelo State, 63-59 on Saturday.

For Cameron (13-12, 5-10 LSC) it is their first win at San Angelo since 2006 but does not guarantee the Ags a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament just yet.

A win by Texas A&M Kingsville over Midwestern State keeps the Javelinas in the hurt.  Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M Commerce are the other two teams that are clumped together with Cameron for the final three slots for the tournament in Allen, Texas.

"I'm really proud of the effort the girls showed today one the court," said head coach Tom Webb. "The win doesn't guarantee us a place in the tournament yet. We just need to take care of business next week against Midwestern and not worry about the other teams around us in the standings."

Both teams went back-and-forth early in the first half, but with the score tied 7-7, the Aggies went on a 10-3 run that forced the Rambelles to take a timeout with 9:39 left. Then a few possessions later Rochelle Norris hit a three-pointer to cut the CU lead to four, but then Chelsea Stamp answered with a three of her own. Cameron built its lead to 12 with back-to-back jumpers by Ali Brown and Jade Herl, and would end the first half on top, 34-25.

The 15 points from the bench gave CU a big boost in the first twenty minutes. Cameron shot 41 percent in the first half while holding ASU to 31 percent.

CU went 4-7 from behind the arc and made all four of their free throws in the half.

Angelo State wasted no time in the second half, going on a 12-2 run to take the lead for the first time since early in the game. Out of the first media timeout, both teams would go back-and-forth for the next seven minutes before Stamp hit a three pointer to give Cameron a seven point lead at the 8:20 mark.

With just over two minutes left and a six point deficit, ASU's Amanda Weaver hit a three pointer. She was fouled by Ali Brown, and hit the free throw for the four point play and trimmed the Aggie lead to two. However, CU scored six straight points to hold off the Rambelles.

Jazzmine Robinson led the Aggies offensively with 19 points and went a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. She also led the team with eight rebounds. Stamp was the other CU player in double figures with 11 points. She hit three 3's to extend to record to 71 this season.

Karli Kellermeier, who scored Angelo's first 10 points of the game, led her team with 19 points. Amanda Weaver also had double figures for the Rambelles with 10 points. ASU shot 34 percent from the field and went 11-18 from the charity stripe.

Cameron will be back at home to take on Midwestern State in the regular season finale on March 1 at 4:00 pm.
