Cameron opens McMahon Field Era with Eastern New Mexico

LAWTON, Okla. – For the Cameron University softball team it will the third times the charm as they will open McMahon Field officially on Friday, February 28 for a three game series with Eastern New Mexico.

After winning 10 out of their last 11 and an 11-4 overall record heading into Lone Star Conference play the Aggies are off to their best start in program history.

For Cameron, it will be fitting to open McMahon Field with the Zias.  Both teams closed the 2013 conference season in Lawton wrapped up their history at Cameron Field last spring.  This is the third time this season that the Aggies have tried to open their new field with weather forcing the cancellation of games earlier this month.

The Aggies enter their home opener with the Zias with the third best batting average at .338 with Makenzie Burk sitting runner up in the league with a .545 batting average and fourth with 10 stolen bases.  Tara Martini is inside the top-10 in hitting with .457 average and she is tied for third after hitting five homers.  

In the circle Sam Betts remains perfect this season with five wins and no losses, while Kelsey Watson is 4-3 in five starts, she is fourth in the LSC with 36 strikeouts.   Of the eight schools in the LSC the Aggie pitching staff as worked the least amount of innings at 96.2,five innings less than the next closest school.

Eastern New Mexico with a 6-10 overall record is sixth in the LSC in batting average (.271) and last in team era (5.90).   With a four game losing streak heading into their contest with the Aggies, Eastern New Mexico opened their season on a five game skid before winning five of six. 

The Zias only common opponent heading into their contest with Cameron is a 6-5 win on Feb. 21 against Rogers State; Cameron swept a doubleheader with the Hillcats in Wichita Falls two weekends ago.

Cameron swept the three game series with the Zias last season and has won four in a row against ENMU.

Friday's game will be a doubleheader starting at 1 pm; Saturday will be a single game starting at noon.
