LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University softball team will have their hands full this weekend as they put their 13-5 record against the #1 ranked West Texas A&M.
The surging Aggies have won 12 out of their last 14 contests, and are coming off a 2-1 series win in their home opener over Eastern New Mexico. They are currently second in the Lone Star Conference standings.
CU has the fourth best batting average in the LSC at .339, with a .516 slugging percentage, and a .404 on base percentage.
Makenzie Burk is tied for second in the conference with a .515 average, is third in on base percentage at .564, and has 11 stolen bases on the season.
Tara Martini and
Sonora Zukerman are both in the top-10 in RBI's with 25 and 22 respectively, while also being tied with six homers a piece. The Aggies have four players in the top 10 in triples, with freshman
Breezy McComas leading the way with three.
In the circle, Cameron has a team ERA of 4.39, with 76 total strikeouts, and an opponent's batting average of .295.
Kelsey Watson (6-3) is fourth in the LSC with an ERA of 2.92 and 44 strikeouts. Both her and Samantha Betts (5-1) have thrown five complete games for the black and gold and have one save a piece.
The Lady Buffs started out the season with a 17-0 record and earned the top spot in the nation after defeating the reigning national champions, Central Oklahoma, earlier this season. They have since then dropped two games to Midwestern State and are now 20-2, but are still ranked #1.
At the plate they hit .346, with a conference best .619 slugging percentage. As a team WT has 32 home runs, 12 triples, and 41 doubles. They are led by Renee Erwin, who is tied with CU's Burk in second in the LSC with a .515 average. She and teammate Jessica Sipe both have seven homers while driving in 26 and 22 RBI respectively.
Pitching is West Texas A&M's strong suit, as they lead the LSC in ERA with a 1.67. Individually, the Lady Buffs have three pitchers with an ERA of under two, with Hannah Newcomb (7-1) having a team best 1.43, while Rita Hokianga (9-1) leads the conference with 112 strikeouts.
The two teams have common opponents in Texas A&M-International and Newman, when the four met up at the Lady Buff Invite. While WT swept both double headers with the Dustdevils and Jets, the Aggies split their double header with Newman and swept the TAMIU games.
Last season, Cameron lost all three of their games against the Lady Buffs. After the three games this weekend, the teams are scheduled to meet up again next week at the LSC Showcase.
The series will start with a double header at 1 p.m. on Friday and will conclude with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. as well.
