Aggies take doubleheader from Midwestern State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University softball team took sole possession of fourth place in the Lone Star Conference after sweeping their rivals Midwestern State 8-6, 3-2 at McMahon Field on Wednesday afternoon.

With the wins against the Mustangs and a 14-10 league record, Cameron guaranteed themselves their first LSC winning campaign since 2009 where CU went 17-7 under the divisional format.

Tara Martini and Misty Dooley kept their reached base streak alive with Martini owning the longest known active streak in program history with 28 after collecting hits in both contests; Dooley walked and singled to move to 25 games in a row.

Game one of the doubleheader turned into a slugfest with four lead changes between both teams.

Midwestern State struck first in the opening frame with a two run homer down the left field line. The Mustang lead was short lived after the Aggies responded back in the bottom half of the inning with a Carly Allerheiligen RBI double and Sonora Zukerman followed up with a RBI single to tie the contest.

Tara Martini put the Aggie ahead in the second with a double but MSU in the next frame responded back with a two run homer to give the Mustangs the 4-3 lead.

In the fourth, Martini trumped MSU with her tenth homer of the year to score two and Zukerman hit a RBI single to put CU in front 6-4.

A CU error while turning a double play with two outs in the sixth led to MSU tying the game with their third homer to tie the game at six apiece. However, in the bottom half of the inning Zukerman plated a pair with a single that squeaked through into outfield to put Cameron ahead one last time as they would win 8-6.

Zukerman led the Ags with three hits and four RBI, Martini had a pair of hits and three RBI, and Allerheiligen scored three runs with a pair of hits.

Kelsey Watson (15-8) became the eleventh pitcher at Cameron to record 100 strikeouts in a season with six; she would allow six runs (three earned) in the win.

In the nightcap, Midwestern State took the early lead the first scoring off of a wild pitch.  Cameron quickly came back with a pair in the next frame after Paige Daino plated a pair off of a single.

After a scoreless inning, MSU opened the inning with a double and the runner advanced to third off an error; a MSU single would even the score once at two.

Both starters in the circle were then locked in for the rest of the way and after eight straight scoreless frames MSU blinked first in the bottom of the seventh.

Emily Nix doubled to start the inning off and she would be pitch ran by Makenzie Burk.  Following a popup, Dooley singled to put runners at the corners and then Allerheiligen hit a 0-2 pitch into shallow leftfield for the second out.  Burk with speed was sent home and beat the throw for the winning run.

Sam Betts (11-7) tossed a complete game gem with only one earned run given up.

Cameron is off until April 25-26 where they will host Texas Woman's to wrap up the regular season.
