Box Score CANYON, Texas -- The Cameron University softball team outslugged Midwestern State 14-10 in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Championships on Friday afternoon.
Aggie batters pulled through with 15 hits for their second postseason win in program history. At 30-18 overall the Aggies also have hit the 30 win marker for the third time in program history.
Cameron stuck first with
Tara Martini hitting a triple to the fence scoring
Misty Dooley and
Breezy McComas.
Sonora Zukerman drove Martini in off a ground out to give CU a 3-0 lead.
Aggie hitters kept going in the second inning with Dooley, McComas, and Martini all getting a RBI single to make it a 6-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning Midwestern State struck back with three solo homers to cut the CU lead in half and they continued to attack in the third plating a run off of a sacrifice fly and a single to make it a 6-5 lead for Cameron.
Martini added a run in the fourth off a sac fly for her fourth RBI of the game to give CU the 7-5 advantage.
A five run inning eruption happened in the fifth with
Macy McKay hitting a RBI two out single to get things going. McComas tripled in a pair and Martini doubled in her fifth RBI of the game to make it a 12-5 CU lead.
The Mustangs countered in the sixth with a solo homer and then a two run shot pulled them within four of the Aggies.
Paige Daino opened the game back up in the seventh with a two run blast that just cleared the right field fence to lead 14-8.
A leadoff walk and a homer by the Mustangs didn't affect the Aggies as
Sam Betts retired the next three batters for the win.
McComas led the Aggies with four hits, with Martini pulling through with three hits and RBI; both Dooley and Daino had a pair of RBI and hits.
Kelsey Watson (16-10) got the win with three innings tossed and three punch-outs; Betts went the final four innings with six strikeouts; both Aggie pitchers gave up five runs.
Cameron will face #1 West Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night.
