Aggies tipoff league play with Lions, TexAnns

Starting 5: 
1. Cameron boasts the league's leading scorer in Jamie Bonnarens who is averaging 16.4 ppg and netted 28 points in last Wednesday's loss to SWOSU.
2. Lejha Smith is 11th in the nation in blocks per game swatting 2.8 a contest and 16th in rebounding grabbing 11.8 per game.
3. Tarleton's starting five has scored 237 of the team's 298 total points through the first five games of the season, which accounts for 79.5 percent of the team's scoring.
4. TAMUC's 5'11'' senior guard Artaejah Gay is three points away from 1,000 career points.
5. On Nov. 22, TAMUC's Courtney Fields came off the bench to shoot 9-for-10 from the arc and net 29 points in a 102-47 win over Letourneau.
 
About the Aggies: Cameron enters Lone Star Conference play with a 2-3 record. They are averaging a league best 72.4 ppg but are allowing a league worst 80 ppg on opponent's side of the floor. The Aggies are shooting 38 percent from the field, 31 percent from three-point range and 67 percent at the line. The team averages a league high 7.6 treys a game, and is tied with West Texas A&M for an LSC best 4.20 blocks per contest.
 
Jamie Bonnarens and Ava Battese are both top-5 scorers in league with Bonnarens leading the conference with 16.4 points per contest. Battese is the top threat from beyond the arc, averaging 3.6 treys a game. Amaka Nwakamma commands the floor at the point guard position, leading her squad by averaging four assists and three steals per contest and a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio. Smith is blocking 2.8 shots per contest and grabs 11.8 rebounds per game.
 
Scouting the Lions: Commerce is 3-3 after losing 66-78 against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Sunday. The Lions shot 31 percent from the field while SEOSU shot 49 percent. They committed a season high 22 fouls as well. Last season's freshman of the year Jenna Price had a season-high 17 points and added eight rebounds against the Savage Storm. The Lions are averaging 66.7 ppg, shoot 35 percent from the field, 32 percent from the deep and 74 percent at the stripe. Gay leads TAMUC in scoring, averaging 13.2 ppg, Brianna Wise 12 ppg and Princess Davis 10.7 ppg. Gay, Wise and Price are among seven total players in the LSC who are shooting above 80 percent from the free throw line.

Scouting the TexAnns: Defending Lone Star Conference Tournament champion Tarleton State is 3-2 overall to start the season and will face Midwestern State who is also 3-2 ahead of their game with the Aggies. Both of their losses this season have been on the road. The TexAnns most recently suffered a 20-point loss (80-60) at No. 8 Lubbock Christian on Nov. 21. 6'2'' forward and LSC Preseason Player of the Year Mackenzie Hailey led the TexAnns with 19 points on 7-17 shooting from the floor and 3-4 shooting from downtown while Katie Webster finished with 11 points on the night. Webster and Hannah Allen led the way with four rebounds each. TSU is averaging 59.6 ppg, and is top-3 in the league's most accurate shooters, shooting 39 percent from the field and 34 percent from three-point range, but they struggle at the line shooting a mere 66 percent.

Looking Back: The Cameron women suffered back-to-back losses last week, falling 98-81 to Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday and 55-77 at Harding on Saturday. Turnovers plagued CU in both contests as they committed 21 versus SWOSU and 19 at Harding. Battese averaged 16 points between both games and totaled eight three-pointers. Bonnarens had a great outing against the Bulldogs as she led all scorers with 28 points and nearly notched a double-double with nine rebounds, but only tallied nine points against HU. Smith got a double-double on 13 points and 11 boards versus SWOSU and almost got a second on Saturday with nine points and 10 rebounds against HU where she also had five blocks.
 
Looking Ahead: 
Following their first two games of conference play, the Aggies will be action next week for week two of the LSC season. They will face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday, Dec. 7 and then Angelo State on Saturday, Dec. 9.
