CU women set to battle the Mustangs and No. 21 Greyhounds at the Aggie Gym

Game Notes

First tip:
- The Cameron women's basketball team opens up the final home stretch with games against Western New Mexico and No. 21 Eastern New Mexico.
- CU is coming off a week where they went 1-1, falling to West Texas A&M, 86-69, and then bouncing back and beating UT Permian Basin by 20.
- Against WT, the Ags couldn't find an answer for the Lady Buffs hot shooting, as they shot 62.3 percent from the field and 50 percent from three point range; Savanna James had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Sasha Watson led WT with 16 points.
- In the 92-72 victory of UTPB, Cameron was on fire themselves, shooting 58.9 percent from the field, 50 percent from the perimeter, and 89.5 percent from the free throw line; Jamie Bonnarens had a career high 32 points to go along with 11 rebounds, as Briana Caro had 23 an 10 for the Falcons.
- Cameron's offense is ranked second in the Lone Star Conference and 17 in the nation in scoring, averaging 78.6 points per game, but is ranked last in the league in scoring defense.
- CU is in the middle of the pack of the conference in shooting from the field and three, but has improved their free throw shooting percentage to 72.4 percent, which is fifth best in the LSC.
- Even while giving up the most points per game in the league, the Aggies still get after people on defense, holding opponents to shooting just over 30 percent from the perimeter, forcing 19.7 turnovers, and racking up 10.5 steals per contest.
- James is top-5 in the LSC in points and rebounds, while ranking second and 13 nationally with a .569 field goal percentage.
- Bonnarens has been on fire recently, averaging 17.6 points in her last 10 games, which has her ranked eighth in the LSC in scoring.
- Halbleib, who has been out the last two games, ranks in the top-20 in scoring, top-5 in rebounding, top-10 in three point shooting, and is tied for first in the conference in steals.
- Charron Montgomery, Hill, and Cristina Soriano are all top-11 in the league in assists and top-7 in steals.
 
About Western New Mexico:
- The Mustangs are currently on an 18 game losing streak, most recently falling to Eastern New Mexico and Texas Woman's last week.
- WNMU averages a league worst 59.7 points per game, while giving up 76.1 to their opponents.
- Western is last in the league in field goal and three point percentage, but is tops in the conference at the foul line, converting 75.5 percent of their free throws.
- Jordan Gutierrez is second in the LSC with 17.8 points per game, while shooting 33 percent from the field and 81.7 percent from the charity stripe.
- Also averaging in double-figures for WNMU is Jade Botelho, who scores 11.7 points per game, while shooting 79.5 percent from the free throw line.

- Series tied 1-1
- This will be the first time WNMU has visited the Aggie Gym
- Last Meeting: January 14, 2017 in Silver City, N.M. (83-60 CU win).
 
Last time vs. the Mustangs:
A slow start in their first meeting, saw CU up by just two points at the break against WNMU, but a 28-14 third quarter and a 21-14 fourth quarter helped the Aggies build up their 33 point lead, as they won 83-60. Cameron recorded 52 points in the paint and got 26 points off of 21 Mustang turnovers, with 15 of them coming off of steals. Bonnarens led CU with 21 points, James had a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Halbleib chipped in 19 points; additionally Hill had a season high 10 assists. Megan Looney had a team high 21 points and 10 rebounds off of the bench for WNMU, while Gutierrez scored 17.
 
About Eastern New Mexico:
- ENMU is now ranked No. 21 in the Division II Media Poll and is first in the LSC standings.
- The Greyhounds have won four out of their last five games, most recently beating both Western New Mexico and Texas Woman's last week.
- Most of ENMU's success is predicated on defense, as they are first in the LSC in blocks, field goal defense, three point defense, and they hold teams to just 65.2 points per game. 
- Kassandra Harris is Eastern's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 11.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game off the bench, while Mikaehla Connor is averaging 11 points and 3.4 assists per contest.
 
The series vs. ENMU:
- ENMU leads 21-12
- The series is 8-7 in favor of CU when playing in the Aggie Gym.
- Last Meeting: January 12, 2017 in Portales, N.M. (84-76 ENMU win).
 
Last time vs. the Greyhounds:
In their first matchup against each other this season, CU trailed 18-13 after the first quarter, but put together a 27-10 second quarter to hold a 40-28 lead at the break. However, the Aggies gave up 56 points to the Greyhounds in the second half, as ENMU shot 60 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes of play to secure the 84-76 win. James had 25 points and Bonnarens chipped in 14 for Cameron, while five players for Eastern scored in double-figures, with former Aggie Brandi Gomez leading the way with 20 points.

Next up:
After Saturday, Cameron will close out their regular season by hosting rival Midwestern State on Tuesday, Feb. 21 and Texas Woman's on Thursday, Feb. 23.
