Bower hits walk off in game one of WT split

LAWTON, Okla. – Cody Bower blasted a two-run homer in walk-off fashion to deliver the Aggie baseball team a 6-5 win over No. 16 West Texas A&M in game one off their double header before CU fell 7-4 in the nightcap on Saturday.

Entering the top of the seventh in the opener, Cameron trailed 5-4 with one runner on base and one out when Bower battled off seven pitches before connecting on the eighth to drive in two on a home run upset of the nationally ranked Buffs.

Cody Knight and Cole Williams also batted in two runs that game. In the third inning, Knight powered a two run shot over the scoreboard in left field to knock the Buffs's lead down to 4-2. Then in the sixth inning, Williams brought in two more on a double putting CU within one run setting up for Bower's walk-off in the seventh.

Blake Welch moved to 3-0 on the mound as he appeared in relief in the fifth, pitching a solid 2.2 innings retiring all nine batters he faced, two on strikeouts in the win. John Millan got the start and Gaige Vines worked for 2.2 innings.

Bower and Knight would each total four RBI on the day after batting in two runs apiece in the final game of the double header. Knight, Micah Kaaukai and Tom McGarry would have three hits each in the series.

Cameron gained a 2-0 lead in the first as both hit RBI singles. However, CU's bats would remain quiet up to the sixth inning with no hits or runners on base as WTAMU took advantage making it a 5-2 game by scoring on a double, passed ball and groundout.

Knight broke the lull in the sixth with a solo shot, his second homer of the day, to put CU within two runs, 5-3. But CU struggled at the plate again, not getting another hit until the eighth, which allowed Bower to drive in another on a groundout, 5-4.

WTAMU dashed the Ags' hopes late in the ninth with a two run homer, and CU went down on three strikeouts in the bottom to fall 7-4.

Starter Andrew Garza (3-3) was charged with the loss. He allowed three runs, two earned in 3.1 innings. Tyler Abrego, Javarias Banks and Reid Garrett made appearances on the mound.

The Aggies are now 24-15 overall and 5-7 in the Lone Star Conference. The Buffs are 27-9 and 8-2 in league play.
