Cameron visits SFA for exhibition

LAWTON, Okla. -- The Cameron women's basketball team will wrap up the calendar year with an exhibition contest at Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, Dec. 29.

Starting 5: 
1. Saturday's exhibition against Stephen F. Austin will be the second time in three seasons that the Cameron women have faced a Division I opponent in an exhibition; the last was in 2016 against Wichita State. 
2. The Aggies are 1-4 in their last five contests and on the season are 1-4 in true road games after their 67-55 loss to St. Mary's on Dec. 18.
3. Senior Natalie Halbleib, who is averaging 14.4 points per game, leads the LSC in three point field goals attempted (61), made (27), and made per game (2.7).
4. The Ladyjacks are ranked in the top-30 in the nation in both total steals (128) and steals per game (11.6), led by Marissa Banfield with 1.9 and Chanell Hayes with 1.8 takeaways per contest. 
5. Hayes also leads the squad with 15.1 points per game while making 25 three pointers at a 42.4 percent clip. 

About the Aggies: 
Cameron is now 3-7 on the season after their loss to the Lady Rattlers on Dec. 18. They are 0-2 against Lone Star Conference opponents and 1-2 against future conference foes. Against STMU, the Aggies shot just 32.8 percent from the floor, 25.8 percent from three and 50 percent from the charity stripe. Halbleib led the way with 12 points to go along with six rebounds, while Maighan Hedge chipped in 10 points, eight of which came in the second half. 

CU is averaging 69.8 points per game offensively, but on the defensive side of the ball they are giving up 78.4 points per outing to their opposition. The Black and Gold is shooting 38.9 percent from the floor, 35 percent from the perimeter, and 67.9 percent from the foul line. They control the boards with 40.6 rebounds per game and a 1.9 margin, while averaging 12.2 assists compared to 19.8 turnovers. Additionally, CU records 6.1 steals and 2.4 blocks per game. 

Cameron's top scorer is the freshman Hedge, who scores 14.8 points per game. She also leads the squad with an average of 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting almost 43 percent from three and over 90 percent from the free throw line. Halbleib is not too far behind her with 14.4 points per contest to go along with a 6.4 rebounding average, while Lejha Smith leads the CU team with 6.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per outing. 

Scouting the Ladyjacks: 
Stephen F. Austin enters their battle with the Aggies with an 8-3 record, most recently going 1-1 at the New Mexico Lobo Invitational where the beat Hampton 70-68 and fell to New Mexico 74-33. SFA shot just 19.3 percent from the floor, 18.5 percent from the perimeter, and 50 percent from the charity stripe in the offensive struggle; Heaven Hamling led the team with nine points, on 3-10 shooting from three. Head coach Mark Kellogg is in his fourth season at SFA and his 14th season overall in coaching. He as amassed a 326-95 record with 62 of his seasons coming at the helm of the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs. 

On the season, Stephen F. Austin is averaging 69.8 points per game and are outscoring their opposition by 10.2 points. They are shooting just over 40 percent from the floor, while hitting on 31.4 percent of their three point shots and 71.1 percent of their foul shots. SFA grabs 39.7 boards per game and has a rebounding margin of 3.2. They have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.0 with 17.1 assists and 17.0 turnovers per contest. The Ladyjacks also average 11.6 steals and 2.6 blocks per game. 

Hayes leads Kellogg's squad with 15.1 points and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 47.7 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from the perimeter. Post player Imani Johnson, 1/3 of a trio of sisters on the team, averages 11.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists, while Riley Harvey chips in 10.2 points per game and a team-best 5.8 rebounds per outing. 

Next Up:
Cameron will open up the new year with five straight home Lone Star Conference battles. The home stand begins with a matchup with Tarleton State on Jan. 3 at 5:30 before hosting Texas A&M-Commerce on Jan. 5 at 2 p.m.
