CU softball to host TWU for home and LSC opener

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University softball team will begin Lone Star Conference play by hosting Texas Woman's for their home opener series this weekend, Feb., 17-18.

The series:
Cameron and Texas Woman's will face off in a three game series with a single game on Saturday, Feb. 17, beginning at 2 p.m.  They will then hit the diamond again on Sunday, Feb. 18, this time for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Saturday's game will be the first Aggie softball game brought to you by the Oklahoma Sports Network, with Matt Lewis and Mike Newell on the call; all three games will have live stats via cameronaggies.com.

About the Aggies:
Cameron started the season with a 4-2 record at the Southeastern Regional Invitational, and they are coming off of a 4-1 mark at the St. Mary's Classic. At the classic, CU was able to run-rule both St. Edward's and Regis in five innings, while beating Fort Hays State and No. 22 St. Mary's in close games.

Kaitlyn Alvarado is leading the Ags with a .615 batting average in 13 at bats, while Madyson Marvulli is batting .387 with two homers and 11 RBI. Annie Combs leads the team with three homers and has 10 RBI with a .313 batting average. Additionally, Abbey Warren and Callie Busby have scored a team best eighth runs, as Lauren Mason has gone 9-10 on the base paths and Brenna Busby has gone 7-10. Overall the Aggies are batting .278 with 57 runs scored and 11 homers.

Cameron's pitchers have been strong in the first two weeks of play. Bethany Hines owns a 2.10 ERA with a 4-1 record in 30 innings pitched. She has 30 strikeouts, while Rylee Willmon has 22. Willmon owns a 3-2 record in 34.1 innings pitched and has a 4.72 ERA. The CU pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.53 in 74 innings of work with 55 total Ks.

Scouting Texas Woman's:
The Pioneers enter the first weekend of conference play with 6-3 mark. They went 3-2 to open the season at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Nev., and then won three out of four games last weekend at the St. Mary's Classic. TWU was picked to finish third in the LSC preseason poll.

Offensively, Hasel Puempel leads the Pioneers with a .484 batting average, 12 runs scored, seven stolen bases, and 15 hits. Tylia Sylestine has the lone homer this season for TWU, while also leading the team with seven RBI. As a team, Texas Woman's is batting .301 with 54 runs scored.

In the circle, Cheyenne Mahy has pitched 25.1 innings and owns a 3.04 ERA with 12 strikeouts. She has gone 3-1 and has an opponent's batting average of .284. Abby Walker has a 2-2 record in 24.1 innings pitched with a team-high 28 strikeouts and a 4.44 ERA. Mahy, Walker, and Reagyn Parrish have combined for a 3.95 ERA in 57 innings with 42 total punchouts.

On deck:
Following their home opener this weekend, the Aggie softball team will be back on the road next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24 as the visit UT Permian Basin for a three game league bout.
