LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron softball team was recently ranked No. 21 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), and they look to continue their strong start as they visit UT Permian Basin for a three game series this weekend, Feb. 23-24.
Cameron and UTPB will begin the three game series with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23 and then will conclude ith with a single game on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m.
The Aggies have started the season 11-3 and are now 3-0 in Lone Star Conference play after sweeping Texas Woman's in a three game series last weekend. They are batting .274 as a team, with 68 runs scored and 13 homeruns. In the circle, CU has a 2.21 ERA, which is third best in the league, while recording a combined 69 strikeouts in 95 innings pitched.
Bethany Hines leads Cameron with a 1.43 ERA and a 6-1 record, while striking out 40 batters in 44 innings pitched. She was recently named LSC Co-Pitcher of the Week after her two strong starts against Texas Woman's.
At the plate, freshmen
Kaitlyn Alvarado and
Madyson Marvulli lead the Black and Gold, with Alvarado posting a .450 batting average and Marvulli topping the Ags with 14 hits and 14 RBI. Additionally,
Callie Busby has 12 hits and a team best 10 runs scores.
UT Permian Basin enters the three game series with a 6-8 record after going 0-3 in their first league series against Midwestern State. They are hitting .250 as a team with 57 runs scored and just six homers through the first couple of weeks of play. The Falcons Have combined ERA of 5.96 in 89.1 innings of work with 45 total strikeouts.
Individually, Adrianna Berzoza leads UTPB with 12 hits and nine runs scored and while batting .324, and April Arellano has a team best eight RBI. Four Falcon pitchers have gone over 20 innings, with Maritza Rojas leading the way with a 3-1 record, a 3.23 ERA, and 22 strikeouts in 34.2 innings pitched.
Cameron will have a quick turnaround following their trip to Odessa, as they host Northwestern Oklahoma State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 27 beginning at 1 p.m.
