LAWTON, Okla. – The No. 21 ranked Aggie softball team continues their tough Lone Star Conference slate this weekend as they face off against Tarleton State in a three game series, March 9-10.
Cameron's fourth three game conference slate will begin on Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m. in Stephenville, Texas. The two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 10 beginning at 1 p.m.
After sweeping their first two league series, Cameron dropped two out of three games to now No. 11 Texas A&M-Commerce last time out, giving them a 15-5 overall record and a 7-2 LSC mark. The series against the Lions started with an 8-6 10 inning loss, where Cameron got a big two homerun, four RBI day from
Brenna Busby. Texas A&M-Commerce then exploded for 11 runs in game two to clinch the series win, but the Aggies responded with a 2-1 win in the final game thanks to a dominant outing from
Rylee Willmon in the circle.
The Aggies are hitting .274 as a team with 95 runs scored and 45 extra base hits, including 18 homers.
Kaitlyn Alvarado leads CU at the plate with a .405 average, while she and B. Busby have a team-leading 177 hits. B. Busby is the Aggie leader with five homers and 15 runs scored, while
Annie Combs leads the Black and Gold with 15 RBI.
In the circle, Cameron has a pair of tough starters that will try and keep the TexAnn offense at bay. Willmon is 7-3 on the season with a 2.13 ERA in 65.2 innings of work.
Bethany Hines has a 2.72 ERA in 61.2 innings pitched with a team best 51 strikeouts; Willmon has 49 Ks on the season.
Tarleton State enters the series receiving votes in the NFCA Top-25 poll and with a 16-5 overall record and a 4-5 league mark. The most recently lost two out of three to now No. 15 West Texas A&M. The two loses in the series came by just two runs each, while the win was a 14-6 win behind three RBI from both Georgia Capell and Meghann Wrinkle.
The TexAnns are batting .344 to start the year with 143 runs scored and 70 extra base hits, including a LSC-best 28 home runs. Capell leads the team with a .453 average, 21 runs scored, nine long balls and 23 RBI. Additionally, Wrinkle is batting .370 with 27 hits and 18 runs scored.
TSU's pitching staff has an ERA of 2.56 with 133 strikeouts in 134 innings pitched and a .220 opponents' batting average. Jordan Withrow leads the way with a 2.51 ERA in 75.1 innings of work and league best 108 Ks, while Haley Freyman has a 1.59 ERA and a 4-1 record in 29 innings pitched.
Cameron will follow up their series with the TexAnns, with a seven game home stretch. They will begin the stretch by hosting Midwestern State for a three game series, March 16-17.
