LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron softball team faces a tough test this weekend as they travel to Canyon, Texas to take on the No. 13 ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs for a three game series, April 13-14.
The Series:
CU and WT will begin the series with a single game on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. The series will continue on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
About the Aggies:
Cameron enters the series with a 26-12 overall record and a 13-8 Lone Star Conference mark. They most recently split a doubleheader at Central Oklahoma, losing in game one 4-1 but taking game two 3-0.
Rylee Willmon had a dominant start in game two, striking out seven, while
Annie Combs and
Brenna Busby each homered.
The Aggies are batting .351 as a team with 195 runs scored, 37 homers, and are second in the LSC with 90 stolen bases, which is more stolen bases than any CU softball team has had in school history. B. Busby leads the Black and Gold with a .351 average while ranking in the top-10 in the conference in home runs (10) and stolen bases (16). Combs is batting .347 with a team best 29 RBI, while
Kaitlyn Alvarado is batting .329 and
Callie Busby is hitting .296 with 26 RBI.
In the circle, Cameron has a team ERA of 2.28 with 193 Ks in 258.1 innings pitched. Willmon leads the team with a 2.13 ERA, going 13-6 with 82 strikeouts in 128.1 innings.
Bethany Hines, who continues to move up the Aggie career wins top-10 list, has a 12-6 mark with a 2.33 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 117.1 innings of work.
Across the Diamond:
The ranked Lady Buffs are now 31-6 on the season and 14-4 in league games. They are coming off of a 2-1 series win over then No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce, in which WT won the final two games, 8-2 and 5-2. WT leads the LSC and is fourth in the nation with a .367 team batting average and are first in Division II in home runs per game at 1.97; they also rank in the top-10 in triples, slugging percentage, scoring, and on base percentage. In the circle the Lady Buffs have a team ERA of 2.24 with 182 strikeouts in 237 innings.
Individually, Kylee Moore and Ashley Hardin rank in the top-10 in the nation in homers, while Moore is fourth in RBI (54) and Suka Van Gurp is ninth in batting average, hitting .491. Hardin and Moore are both also hitting over .400, while six others are hitting over .320. Kilee Halbert owns a 2.17 ERA with 114 Ks in 122.1 innings while Shayne Starkey has a 1.81 ERA with 55 punchouts in 73.2 innings of work.
On Deck:
Cameron will host Western New Mexico for their final home games of the 2018 season. The series will begin on Friday, April 20 with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and will conclude with another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday; only the first three contests will count towards the teams' LSC records.
