LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University women's and men's tennis teams will officially begin their 2019 spring season this weekend as they take on Drury and Washburn in Springfield, Mo.
Both Aggie teams will play Drury on Friday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. and then Washburn on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m.
The No. 22 ranked CU women began their spring with three straight exhibitions against Division I opponents. They lost their first two matches to UT San Antonio and New Mexico 4-0 and 5-0, before battling former Lone Star Conference member Abilene Christian in a 6-1 loss.
Cameron returns almost everyone from a squad that went 16-8 a year ago and lost to MSU Texas in both the conference and regional championship finals. They had a strong fall that saw
Zhenia Shviadok and
Sarah Frendo win the programs first ever ITA Regional Tournament as a pair and Shviadok as a singles player. CU also returns key players in
Sara Petric,
Melany Opolz, and
Rebeka Velasova.
With just one scrimmage under their belt this spring, the Aggie men will debut on Friday. Like the women, head coach
Josh Cobble returns most of his crew from last season, in which they went 9-11 and lost 5-4 in the LSC championship finals to MSU. Cobble will look to returners Przemslaw Zielinski,
Julen Gutierrez,
Vinicius Santos,
Julien Aubry-Damon,
Blake Graham, and
Stefan Svicevic to mix with a few new faces and make another run at the conference and regional titles.
Follwing their two opening matches, the Aggie men will face Collin County CC and Tyler JC in Plano, Texas, Feb. 7-8, before both teams battle DI UT Arlington on Feb. 14. Cameron's first home matches will be on Feb. 15 when both teams hosts Seward County CC. Â
