Aggies to battle SWOSU for home opener

LAWTON, Okla. -- Cameron's women look to snap their three game losing skid on Wednesday as they face Southwestern Oklahoma State in their first game in front of their home crowd in the Aggie Gym.

Starting 5: 
1. Maighan Hedge scored 25 points in a loss to Central Oklahoma last Saturday, marking the second time this season and the 11th time in her short CU career that she has eclipsed the 20-point plateau in a game; the sophomore is currently second in the LSC in scoring (16.8 ppg).
2. Senior Amaka Nwakamma has had a solid start to her comeback season, scoring double-figures in two of the last three games while averaging 11.2 points and 4.2 rebounds for CU this season. 
3. Cameron's loss to UCO last Saturday was their third loss of the season by over 30 points; they currently have a scoring margin of -25.0 and give up over 85 points a game to their opposition. 
4. Southwestern Oklahoma State is ranked No. 25 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top-25 Poll, as last seasons National Championship runner-ups are 4-2 to start the 2019-20 campaign; they are coached by former Aggie Kelsi Musick, who played at Cameron from 1998-2002.
5. Maddie Sperle, a 6-0 junior forward, and Makyra Tramble, a 5-10 freshman forward, lead the Bulldogs with 14.8 and 14.7 points per game respectively; Sperle is shooting over 45 percent from the field and Tramble is second on the team with 6.5 rebounds per contest.  

Last time out: 
The Aggie offense struggled once again in their 107-58 loss to UCO this past Saturday as they recorded their second straight game shooting under 30 percent from the field. They were just 8-28 from three-point range and turned the ball over 20 times which resulted in 33 UCO points in the loss. One plus for the Black and Gold was their free throw shooting, which they were able to hit on 14 of their 18 attempts.

Hedge had her second 20-point outing of the season, scoring a game-high 23 points on 7-18 shooting from the floor, 5-11 from three, and 4-4 from the free throw line. The Aussie also had three of CU's 12 assists in the contest.

Nwakamma added 13 points on 4-8 shooting to go along with a team-high six rebounds, while freshman Stephanie Peterson had a CU-best four helpers to go with her three points on Saturday.  

About the Aggies: 
Cameron is just 1-4 to start out the 2019-20 season with their one win coming against Adams State back on the first week of the season. CU is averaging just 60.6 points per game while shooting 34 percent from the floor and 28.2 percent from three-point range. The Aggies are currently third in the Lone Star Conference in free throw shooting, hitting 76.6 percent of their foul shots, but make just 14.4 per outing. Cameron also trails in the battle on the glass by 5.0 and turn the ball over 7.4 more times per game than their opposition resulting in an average of 22.8 points off turnovers. They averaged 6.2 steals and 2.2 blocks on defense while allowing teams to shoot almost 48 percent and score over 85 points against them.  

Hedge leads the squad and is second in the LSC with 16.8 points per game. The sophomore from Australia is shooting 38 percent from three and 87.5 percent from the free throw line and averages 3.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists on the year. Nwkamma is second on the team in both scoring and rebounding with 11.2 points and 4.2 boards per outing, while freshman Kami Porter leads CU with an average of 5.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists to go along with her 9.6 points per game. 

Scouting the Bulldogs: 
The Bulldogs season has included three blowout wins over Washburn, St. Mary's, and East Central, a one-point victory over Pittsburg State, and a pair of losses to No. 2 Lubbock Christian and Southeastern Oklahoma State. They are averaging 77.2 points per game while shooting 38.5 percent from the floor and 33.2 percent from three this season. They also record 15.0 assists and 12.5 steals per outing, forcing their opponents into an average of 19.0 turnovers which result in 21.8 points per game for the Bulldogs.

Maddie Sperle leads the team with 14.8 points per game on 45 percent shooting from the field and 40.7 percent from three. She is followed closely by Makyra Tramble, who is averaging 14.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a freshman; both players had 20-plus point outings against PSU and the StMU. Additionally, Tyra Aska averages just over 10 points per outing while Taber Beer leads SWOSU in assists (4.7) and Bethany Franks grabs a team-high 8.2 rebounds per night.   

Who has next:
Cameron has over a week before their next game, which will be their Lone Star Conference opener on Dec. 7 at Western New Mexico. They follow that up with a trip to UT Permian Basin the next weekend and then will be back in the Aggie Gym on Dec. 19 and 21 for games against Angelo State and Lubbock Christian.
