Trio of games await CU in Joplin

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron Aggie softball team travels to Joplin, Mo. to partake in the Missouri Southern TMZ Tournament with a tripleheader slate set for Friday, March 1.
 
About the Aggies:
Cameron is now 11-7 after winning their game on Tuesday against Southwestern Oklahoma State 12-1, behind big games from Brenna Busby, Callie Busby, Alyssa Osterdock, and Bethany Hines. B. Busby leads CU with four homers, 18 runs scored, and 15 RBI on the season. She is also batting .327, which is second on the team to freshman Khmari Edwards, who is batting .396 with 12 RBI to open her first year with the Aggies. C. Busby, Breley Webb, Raley Long, and Abbey Warren are all hitting over .300 to start the 2019 campaign. As a team, the Aggies have a .290 batting average with 97 runs scored and 36 extra-base hits.
 
Webb and Hines lead CU in the circle, as Webb has a 2.21 ERA and is 2-0 with 18 strikeouts in 19 innings while Hines has a 2.57 ERA with a team-best 34 strikeouts in 46.1 innings of work. Combined with solid efforts from Rylee Willmon and Turner Whorton, Cameron's pitching staff owns a 2.90 ERA with 81 total K's in 116 innings pitched.

The Bearcats have played six games so far this season, and hold a 2-4 record. Both the Aggies and Bearcats have played Midwestern State and Rogers State so far this season the Bearcats fell to RSU 4-7, whereas the Aggies won 8-3. Northwest Missouri took their season opener against Midwestern State 6-3 and in the first series of Lone Star Conference play the Mustangs took two of three from CU. The Bearcats are led at the plate by Kaitlyn Weis who has started all six games for NWMSU and holds a .500 average with a team high three home runs and eight RBI's. The Junior from Gretna, Neb. has only been a victim of the strikeout twice. In the circle, the Bearcats have only turned to Regan Thompson and Rachel Smith to start contests with the two having three starts apiece. Thompson holds a team best 1.62 ERA and turns in a 1-1 record. She has tossed over seventeen innings and has 15 strikeouts one short of the team high of 16 held by Smith.

The Griffons are 9-7 this season, and are coming off a pair of losses to Drury University last week. They have the MIAA reigning hitter of the week in Morgan Frost. The Senior outfielder held a .565 batting average 1.130 slugging percentage and a .565 on base percentage over the last week. Frost holds a .421 average on her way to collecting 24 hits, tied for the team high two home runs, and 15 RBI's. In the circle, MWSU does not have a pitcher with a sub two ERA, though Sophomore Kaili Hinds from Centralia, Mo. is close with a 2.06 ERA and a team high 26 punchouts. She also leads the Griffons in innings pitched. Hinds has gone the distance in each of her four starts while also making five other appearances out of the bullpen. Kenzie Hilzer has made a team high seven starts and finished just two of them. She has posted the second lowest team ERA with a 3.67 mark. Hilzer does hold the lowest batting average against on the team as teams struggle to hit .243 off the junior pitcher.

In the final game of the TMZ Tournament for the Aggies, they will take on Northeastern State in a rematch of the Feb. 10 game in the Edmond Classic. The Black and Gold won that tilt 6-5, highlighted by Brenna Busby going yard to put the Aggies up in the fourth inning and they never looked back. The Rivehawks hold an 8-9 record and are led at the dish by Hannah Ailey who holds a .545 slugging percentage and .273 average. Haley Acrey, who went two for three against Cameron the last time out, turns in a .244 average for the season and has started all 13 games for NSU; she has scored four runs and plated three more.
 
On Deck:
Cameron returns to LSC play next weekend when they host Texas A&M Kingsville next for a three game slate. Game one of the series is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, March 8, with a doubleheader to follow on Saturday, March 9, beginning at 1 p.m.
