LAWTON, Okla. – The No. 13 ranked Cameron men's tennis team is set to host St. Edward's on Sunday for a chance to play in the National Tournament.
The Aggies enter the South Central Region Tournament as the two seed and will host the three seed Hilltoppers at 2 p.m. at the Streich-Henry Family Tennis Complex.
This spring, the Black and Gold posted an 18-4 record and used a 3-0 conference mark to claim the Lone Star Conference regular season title. After being ranked No. 1 in the regional rankings all season, a 4-2 loss in the LSC tournament final to MSU Texas dropped them to second in the final poll.
Cameron had a handful of players honored by the Lone Star Conference on Thursday.
Vinicius Santos was named the conference's Player of the Year, while head coach
Josh Cobble was selected the Coach of the Year. Additionally,
Pierre Marion was selected as one of the LSC's Sportsmanship Players of the Year. Santos was named All-LSC in both singles and doubles along with his partner
Julen Gutierrez.
Przemyslaw Zielinski and
Mritunjay Badola were both selected All-LSC honorable mention in both singles and doubles.
St. Edward's, who was the top team in the Heartland Conference this season, own a 19-6 record this spring. Their team consists of the league's Player of the Year Chase Bartlett, along with Freshman of the Year Anish Srinketh and Outstanding Senior of the Year Logan Buignet. SEU is led by the Heartland's Coach of the Year Estevan Strecker.
The Aggies and Hilltoppers met up back on March 30 of this year, with CU coming away with a 4-0 win. Santos and Gutierrez and
Oscar del Granado and Marion both came away with 7-5 wins in doubles play to give their team a 1-0 lead, and then wins by Badola, Zielisnki, and Granado notched singles wins to secure the victory.
