WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Cameron freshman
Bruno Vietri won the men's singles Flight B and
Julianne Garcia made it to the women's singles Flight D finals as the Aggie men and women's tennis teams compete in the Midwestern State Invitational this weekend.
Vietri opened up the invite with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the opening round. He then came back from a 6-3 first set loss to win his second match against a Seward CC opponent. The CU freshman wrapped up the bracket with two-set wins over opponents from Washburn and Seward to claim the Flight B title.
Julen Gutierrez, who was also in Flight B, bookend his weekend with a pair of wins.
In Flight A,
Pierre Marion won his opening match but lost the next three, and
Oscar del Granado bounced back from a first round loss to win three straight matches to end his weekend 3-1.
Cameron's
Jesus Villamizar and
Santiago Berdasco were in the third flight, with Villamizar going 2-1 and Berdasco going 1-2 in singles play.
Carlos Vidal was the only Aggie in Flight D and he went 2-1.
The Aggies had three pairings in the men's doubles flights. In Flight A, Marion and Gutierrez lost their opening match, but rebounded with a 7-6 win against an MSU duo. Del Granado and Vietri lost their first match as well, but pulled out two 6-2 wins to close out the invite 2-1. Villamizar and Berdasco competed in Flight B, losing their first match 6-4 and winning their second by the same score.
On the women's side of the invitational, Cameron had six singles players and a trio of doubles teams.
Vasilisa Polunova and
Alisa Savina were competing in Flight A. Polunova notched a pair of wins to start the bracket before losing in the semis. She then earned a 7-6, 1-6, 10-4 victory over an MSU player to finish third in the flight. Savina won her first match 6-3, 7-5 before falling in the next two.
In Flight B,
Melany Opolz bookend her three matches with a pair of wins, while
Alex Lopez got a bye in the first round, lost her second round match, and then won her final battle in three sets.
Pilar Jaurena went 2-2 in Flight C, with wins over opponents from Washburn and Seward. Garcia made it to the finals of Flight D with three wins to open the invite, but fell 6-2, 6-0 to MSU's Casey Curry in the final.
In the women's doubles Flight A, Opolz and Lopez won their first match 6-3 but lost their next two, while Savina and Polunova did the opposite with a 2-1 record. Jaurena and Garcia won their first two matches in Flight B but lost 6-3 in the final.
The MSU Invite was Cameron's last tune up before the fall ITA Regionals. The women are up first as they compete next weekend, Sep, 27-29, Arlington, Texas. The men's regional will be Oct. 4-6 in Wichita Falls.
