Softball looks to stay hot in Edmond

LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggie softball team looks to keep rolling as they head to the metro for the second leg of the Edmond Festival this weekend, Feb. 21-23.

After a slow start to the season, the Aggies have pulled a full 180, as they sit with a 9-5 record and riding a seven-game winning streak.

The Black and Gold offense has enjoyed a spark from Senior backstop Callie Busby who turns in a team-high .395 batting average, with two home runs, eight extra-base hits, and 15 RBIs. CU sees five hitters with a batting average north of .320.

In the circle, the Aggies have gotten a huge boost from Turner Whorton. She has tossed 33.2 innings to the tune of a 2.29 ERA, with 28 strikeouts and a pair of saves. Whorton was named the LSC's Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, after her two wins and sub-1.00 ERA last weekend.

Cameron's turnaround started in the metro as the team went 4-1 during the first weekend of the Edmond Regional Festival. CU went on to post a perfect 4-0 record at the MSU Invitational last weekend. The second weekend at the festival will prove to be a tough one, as the Aggies will run up against receiving votes Central Oklahoma and the No. 22 ranked Rodgers State Hillcats, highlighting the weekend. The Black and Gold will also see Pittsburgh State for the third time this season and Nebraska-Kearney for the second time in as many weekends.

The first team on the docket for the Aggies this weekend is a new foe in Fort Hays State, with the matchup taking place at 12 p.m. on Friday. The Tigers are off to a respectable 8-4 start and are currently sitting on a three-game winning streak.

In the circle, the Tigers are led by Michaelanne Nelson. The Senior pitcher from Perry, Okla. has tossed 34.1 innings to the tune of a 2.85 ERA, with 41 strikeouts to her credit. Nelson has been able to go the distance in two of her starts and has held opponents to a team-low .207 batting average.

At the plate, CU will have to work around Terran Caldwell, the Junior outfielder turns in a team-best .440 batting average, with three RBIs, and has already earned seven walks.

The second game on Friday gets underway at 6 p.m. when the Aggies meet the Bronchos on the diamond for the second time this season. Both teams have fallen out of the NFCA top-25 after slow starts to the year, but UCO is still receiving votes. They sit just one game over .500 and have spiraled since their 5-2 win over CU to start the season.

Central's lack of wins have not slowed down Hazel Puempel, who turns in a .471 batting average, with nine extra-base hits, and 13 RBIs. Not only does she own the best batting average on the UCO squad, but she also turns in a .725 slugging percentage.

In the circle, Kylee Lynch has done her best to keep the Bronchos afloat. The freshman pitcher from Chandler, Okla. posts a team-best 1.64 ERA with two complete games, and a team-high 34 strikeouts.

After beating Nebraska-Kearney, 6-2 last Saturday, the two sides meet up again on Saturday at 10 a.m. In their last matchup, Bethany Hines tossed five innings, getting five strikeouts and only allowing a pair of runs. Brenna Busby was able to do damage at the plate clubbing two homers in her two at-bats. UNK still turns in a 6-4 record, despite ending their weekend with a loss to the Aggies. That matchup will be CU's only game on the campus of Oklahoma Christian this time around.

CU will wrap up Saturday's action with the third matchup against the Pittsburg State Gorillas. The Aggies have gotten the better of PSU in each of their first two meetings, including a nine-inning thriller that saw the Aggies walk away with a 7-5 record. PSU is looking to rebound, as they are off to a sluggish 3-11 start overall. The Gorillas enter this weekend looking to snap a six-game skid.

The Aggies end the weekend with a matchup against 22nd ranked Hillcats on Sunday at 2 p.m. RSU turns in a 14-2 record with their lone losses being to No. 14 Southern Arkansas and Delta State. Their record also features an impressive win over No. 10 A&M-Commerce.

Cameron's pitching staff will have their work cut out for them with the Hillcat offense. Rodgers State has already scored 126 runs on this young season. Makayla Bowman turns in a .486 batting average, she already has six extra-base hits and a jaw-dropping 17 RBIs. Elexis Watson provides power in the RSU batting order, as she has already slapped four homers this season with a team-best 22 RBIs.

In the circle, the Hillcats will be led by Andrea Morales, who has tossed 66 innings to the tune of a 1.90 ERA, and .71 WHIP. Morales has already punched out 86 batters this season.

Cameron's final non-conference weekend slate will be followed their home and Lone Star Conference opener, which will be against Lubbock Christian on Friday, Feb. 28.
