LAWTON, Okla. – Looking to snap two-game skid, Aggie softball makes their home debut with four games against ranked Lone Star Conference foes Lubbock Christian and Angelo State this weekend, Feb. 29 and March 1.
Â
Despite already playing 19 games, the Aggies have yet to make their 2020 debut at McMahon Field. With the expanded conference, league schedules now feature a pair of doubleheaders against two different opponents during the week.
Â
Cameron's first league weekend starts on Friday with a pair of games against No. 22 Lubbock Christian with game one set for 3 p.m. On Sunday, March 1, CU will host No. 8 Angelo State with game one of the two-game set getting underway at 1 p.m. at McMahon Field.
Â
Turning in a 12-7 record, the Aggies have already been involved in three tilts against ranked opponents. They have yet to knock off a ranked opponent, most recently dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker to then 22nd ranked Rogers State.  Â
Â
Cameron is hitting .288 on the season with 109 runs scored and 50 extra-base hits, 11 of those coming via homers. Senior backstop
Callie Busby leads the way with a .375 average, eight doubles, three homers, and 23 RBI. Her twin sister
Brenna Busby is right behind her, batting .333 with a team-best 21 runs scored to go along with three homers and 12 RBI. Sophomore
Khmari Edwards chips in 17 runs driven in while hitting .328 out of the two-hole. CU also has a pair of over .300 hitting outfielders in senior
Kaylyn Smith and
Mikayla Oaks.
Â
In the circle, the Black and Gold's pitching staff leads the league with 111 strikeouts in 132 innings of work. They also own a team-ERA of 3.13 and a .238 opponents batting average. Seniors
Turner Whorton and
Bethany Hines lead the way with Whorton owning a 2.42 ERA and 35 K's, while Hines has a team-best 63 strikeouts to go along with a 3.87 ERA. Adding to the grouping is sophomore
Breley Webb, who was added to the rotation two weeks ago. Webb owns a 2.80 ERA and nine K's in her 15 innings of work.
Â
First up this weekend is Lubbock Christian who boasts a 15-3 record, including four wins over ranked opponents. However, like the Black and Gold, LCU ended last weekend with a loss.Â
Â
In the circle, the Lady Chaps are led by Taylor Franco. The sophomore turns in a 1.21 ERA over the course of 57.2 innings. Franco only allows opponents to hit for a .196 average and has already punched out 54 batters this season.
Â
The Aggie pitching staff will need to navigate a powerful lineup that has already clubbed 15 homers, has seen over 100 runs come around to score, and turns in a near .300 team batting average. The LCU lineup is sparked by Athena Muniz who turns in a .459 batting average and has knocked five extra-base hits in just 16 games. Brooke Makemson has started all 18 games for the Lady Chaps to the tune of a .380 batting average, adding another five extra-base hits and driving in nine runs.
Â
After a tough two-game series with the Lady Chaps, the Aggies will play host to the Angelo State, who will play Oklahoma Christian on Friday and enters the week with a 13-3 record that features wins over two then ranked opponents; they have won 10 straight.
Â
At the dish for the Rambelles, Courtney Barnhill has started all 16 games, posting a .354 average with five extra-base hits and 11 RBI. Barnhill also presents a stolen base threat as the senior has been able to swipe 15 bases already this season.
Â
The Belles feature four pitchers who turn in a sub-2.00 ERA with six innings pitched or more. They are led by Meagan Hill, who has tossed 28 innings to the tune of a 0.50 ERA, with 27 strikeouts. Genesis Armendariz is the Rambelles other workhorse in the circle as she has already gone 42 innings with a 1.32 ERA, and has struck out 27 batters, only allowing an opponent batting average of .200.
Â
Following their four-game homestand, Cameron faces their first two conference road tests in No. 16 A&M-Commerce, March 6, and Texas Woman's, March 8.
