The Aggies are looking to respond from a 1-4 start to the season last week at the Arkansas Tech Winter Classic. The CU bats will try to heat up in the metro despite frigid weather temperatures this week. After scoring just 16 runs in five games a week ago, the offense needs to come alive this weekend against another stacked field in Edmond.
Â
Five more games headline the first leg of the UCO/OC hosted invitational for the Black and Gold. Including a rematch with the Pittsburg State Gorillas, who CU blanked 4-0 last Sunday for their first win of 2020.
Â
Khmari Edwards will look to build on her solid first weekend, that saw her collect seven hits on her way to a .389 batting average. Edwards not only drove in three runs but came around to score as many times.
          Â
Freshman
Mikayla Oaks enjoyed an opening weekend that saw her post a pair of triples, and an RBI to the tune of a .385 batting average, second only to Edwards for the team-high.
Â
In the circle for the Black and Gold will be standout senior
Bethany Hines leading the as she has already compiled 25 innings of work and 19 strikeouts in 2020.
Turner Whorton has also been solid for the Aggies through their five games.
Â
The Aggies will get the weekend started in Edmond, Okla. on Friday morning, before shifting over to Oklahoma City for the afternoon tilt.
Â
At 10 p.m. on Friday the Aggies take on Southwest Baptist University. This will be the Bearcats' first game of the 2020 season. SBU is looking for a bounce back season after failing to win double-digit games a year ago finishing the season with an 8-47 record. The Bearcats will be led in the circle by Maddie Massanelli who was a workhorse for SBU a year ago. She tossed over 146 innings a year ago, with 91 strikeouts to go along with a 5.77 ERA.
Â
Friday is wrapped up in Oklahoma City when the Black and Gold take on Colorado Christian at 2 p.m. Colorado Christian has jumped out to a 3-2 record to start the season after an exciting weekend in Las Vegas. CCU has already scored 33 runs this season and have four hitters with a batting average of .400 or better.
          Â
Jennifer Romero tossed over 16 innings in the first weekend of the season to the tune of a 4.20 ERA. Romero earned 18 strikeouts a weekend ago. The Cougars saw two hurlers enter the circle out of the bullpen and toss zeros last weekend.
Â
At the dish, the Cougars are led by Kacie Burger. The junior shortstop started all five games for the Cougars in Vegas and was able to turn in a .600 batting average with nine RBIs, including four home runs. Burger also came around to score eight times and will present a tough test for the Aggie pitching staff to work around.
Â
On Saturday night, the Aggies stay in OKC for their lone game of the day, as they take on East Central. ECU has yet to start their season and will get a trio of tune-up games before their date with the Aggies. The Tigers boast seven returners from a team that went 26-25 a year ago.
Â
ECU is headed up offensively by Tatiana Bryant who turned in a .304 batting average, three home runs, and 19 RBIs in 2019. In the circle, Paige Leschber will lead the ECU pitching staff in the circle. Leschber started 15 contests a year ago and turned in a sub-4.00 ERA in over 100 innings pitched.
Â
The Aggies wrap up the first leg of the invitational with two contests on Sunday, both taking place in Edmond. The day will start for the Aggies at 10 a.m. as they take on Missouri Southern State University. The Lions will make the trek from Joplin, MO. all the way to Edmond for this event and are pegged for a ninth place finish in the MIAA.
Â
Southern returns five starters from last year's 19-25 squad, led by Makaila Leonhart, who turned in a .343 batting average in her 44 starts a year ago. Leonhart was able to slap 15 extra-base hits, including nine doubles.
Â
The weekend again concludes with a matchup against the Gorillas. The Aggies defeated PSU 4-0 last Sunday. In that contest, Edwards went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Whorton tossed six scoreless with three strikeouts. The Gorillas were only able to earn two hits against the Black and Gold a week ago. Overall, PSU finds themselves in the same boat as the Aggies, looking for a bounce-back weekend after going 2-4 at the ATU Classic.
Â
Sandwiched between two weekends at the Edmond Festival, next week, Feb. 14-16, Cameron will compete in the Midwestern State Invitational, where they will face off against Southwestern Oklahoma, Northwestern Oklahoma, Nebraska-Kearney, and Regis.
