CU's first true road tests come at A&M-C and TWU

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron softball team continues their string of games against ranked opponents as they visit No. 14 A&M-Commerce on Friday and then Texas Woman's on Sunday for a pair of road Lone Star Conference doubleheaders.

Cameron is less than a week removed from splitting a pair of twin-bills at home against No. 20 Lubbock Christian and No. 9 Angelo State. Against the Lady chaps, CU lost a 2-1 pitcher's duel in game one before bouncing back for a 6-4 win in the nightcap. Two days later, the Aggies suffered a 14-7 game one loss to the Rambelles before winning game two 8-4 thanks to home runs by Khmari Edwards, Brenna Busby, and Callie Busby.

Speaking of the senior backstop, C. Busby is leading CU with a .377 average and has eight doubles, a triple, and is tied for the team-high with her sister with four homers. Her 26 RBI is currently tied for the Lone Star Conference lead.

The previously mentioned middle infielders are the only other two Aggies hitting over .300. Edwards is hitting .356 with seven doubles, one triple, two bombs, and 20 RBI, while B. Busby owns a .324 average with 23 runs scored, nine extra-base hits, and 15 RBI. The program's stolen base leader is also 15-18 on the base paths this season. Cameron is hitting .288 as a team with 131 runs scored through 25 games.

In the circle, Cameron has a three-headed monster that includes seniors Bethany Hines and Turner Whorton and sophomore southpaw Breley Webb. Whoton has been the most effective so far, turning in a 2.62 ERA and a 4-1 record through 14 appearances this season. She has 40 K's in 50.2 innings of work and is tied for the conference lead with her three saves.

Hines is near the top of the league in strikeouts with 72 in 78.1 innings of work. The Washington, Okla. native is 7-7 on the year with a 3.75 ERA and an opponents' batting average of .267. After missing the first few weeks recovering from an offseason injury, Webb has notched a 4.58 ERA with 18 K's in 26.0 innings in the circle. CU's staff owns a combined 134 strikeouts and a 3.41 team ERA.

The Aggies are very familiar with their Friday opponent, the A&M-Commerce Lions. The two teams faced each other five times last season, with the Lions winning the regular season series 2-1, but CU getting the better of them in the South Central Regional final with back-to-back wins.

This year's A&M-C squad has started the season with a 13-6 record with a 4-5 mark against then ranked opponents, including a doubleheader sweep of No. 11 Rogers State on Tuesday, a team that beat Cameron 3-2 just a few weeks ago.

Entering their second straight home weekend of softball, the Lions are hitting .291 as a team with 85 runs scored and 42 extra-base hits. Sophomore Madison Schaefer leads the way with a .424 average with six homers and 23 runs driven in. Five other A&M-C hitters own a batting average over .300 this season.

Preseason Pitcher of the Year in the LSC Emily Otto has gotten off to a 6-3 start despite facing some tough offensive teams. Otto owns a 3.16 ERA with 65 strikeouts and a .197 opponents' batting average in 62.2 innings of work. Freshman Alyssa LeBlanc has been dominant in her first 14 appearances, turning in a 1.66 ERA, 73 strikeouts, and an opponents' batting average of .149 in 59.2 innings in the circle. The Lion staff owns a 2.50 ERA with 141 K's and a .180 batting average against.

Despite starting the season just 5-13, the Texas Woman's Pioneers have a trio of wins again then ranked opponents, including an upset of No. 1 Augustana in their season opener. They are 0-4 in league play as they faced ranked Commerce and UT Tyler teams last weekend; TWU mustered just seven runs combined for the four games.

At the plate, the Pioneers are hitting .263 with 32 extra-base hits and 65 runs scored this season. Sophomore Paige Tamayo is tearing the cover off the ball with a .444 average and six homers to go along with 22 RBI, which is far and above the most on the team. Just one other TWU hitter, Avery Williams, is batting over .300 and the rest of the team has one home run combined.

Texas Woman's turns in a 5.47 team ERA with 68 combined punch-outs and a .359 opponents' batting average. Bailey Turner has been the workhorse, with a 5.63 ERA and 46 K's in 59.2 innings of work. Freshman Bailey Tisdale is 2-0 on the season with a 4.40 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 20.2 innings in the circle.

Cameron's weekend begins in Commerce, Texas on Friday, March 6, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 4 p.m. at the John Cain Family Softball Complex. The two-game set at Texas Woman's on Sunday, March 8, will begin at noon in Denton, Texas.
