LAWTON – The Cameron women's basketball team's momentum was halted by a winter storm that postponed last weekend's games against St. Mary's, but they look to continue their winning streak against a tough West Texas A&M squad this Friday and Saturday.
STARTING 5:
1. Before their games last weekend at St. Mary's were postponed due to weather, Cameron handed ranked Texas A&M-Commerce their second loss of the season, holding the Lions to under 30 percent shooting from the field and under 20 percent shooting from three.
2. The Aggies are 16th in all of NCAA Division II in three-point defense, holding opponents to just a .249 shooting percentage from long range; during their four-game winning streak, no team has shot better than 28 percent from three against CU.
3. Junior forward
Whitney Outon had a breakout game against the Lions, scoring a career-high 17 points on 6-13 shooting from the field and 4-10 shooting from three; Outon added six rebounds and three assists in the win.
4. Kristen Mattio's West Texas A&M squad, like most years, is ranked in the top-10 in both Division II polls, coming in at No. 5 in the WBCA and No. 8 in the D2SIDA ranking with a 14-1 record.
5. WT is led by the Preseason Player of the Year and perennial first team All-LSC selection Lexi Hightower, who leads the LSC with 17.3 points per game this season.
LAST TIME OUT:
On Tuesday, Cameron pulled off one of the biggest upsets in program history, taking down No. 7 Texas A&M-Commerce, 66-61. The Aggie defense has been stellar the past few games and that continued against the Lions, holding them to just 11 points in each of the first two quarters and limiting them to a 29.2 field goal percentage and a 19 percent clip from deep. On the other side of the court, CU knocked down 40 percent of their shots from the floor while going 8-21 from long range. Outon had a breakout game, going for 17 points on 6-13 shooting. The junior hit four makes from three and added six rebounds and three steals. Sophomore forward
LaKya Leslie added 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Black and Gold.
ABOUT THE AGGIES:
Cameron, now 7-5 on the season, is one of the top scoring teams in the LSC, scoring 69 points per game while shooting 38 percent from the field and 32.2 percent from deep, where they average 8.8 makes per game. They collect 14.2 assists per game, compared to 16.9 turnovers, which is good for the third best assist/turnover ration in the conference.
Maighan Hedge, third in the conference in scoring, leads the way with her 16.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.8 steals per outing.
Stephanie Peterson is right there behind her in terms of total production, averaging 11.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
SCOUTING THE LADY BUFFS:
West Texas A&M is the second straight top-10 ranked opponent that the Aggies have faced in the past two weeks. The Lady Buffs are ranked because of their 14-1 record, with their last and only loss coming in double overtime against Midwestern State on Jan. 2. They rank in the top-10 in all of Division II in scoring margin (18.8), scoring defense (53.5), and field-goal percentage (48.2). They also force over 18 turnovers per outing with 10.1 of those coming on steals. Hightower leads the way, as the senior guard is shooting 57 percent from the field, 47 percent from three, and 84.4 percent from the charity stripe while also averaging 17.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.9 steals. Senior post Abby Spurgin adds 12.8 points per game for WT while leading the team with 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per outing.
AGAINST WT:
Cameron's all-time series with West Texas is one of the most lopsided of the program's conference foes, with CU coming away with just three wins in the 46-game history. The Aggies have not come away with a win against WT since 2012 and they are 2-18 against the Lady Buffs when playing in the Aggie Gym. The two teams met just once last season, with WT coming away with an 80-46 win. CU was out-scored 46-18 in the second half as Hedge was the only CU player to reach double-figures with 12 points on 4-8 shooting against the rival from Canyon. Spurgin led WT with 19 points on 7-10 shooting while recording five blocks on the defensive end.
WHO HAS NEXT:
Cameron's final two matchups on the schedule are rescheduled LSC divisional contests against Texas Woman's. The Aggies and Pioneers are set to play the first meeting on Thursday, Feb. 25, in Denton, Texas before wrapping up the regular season in the Aggie Gym on Saturday, Feb. 27.
