LAWTON – The Cameron women's basketball team is set for a rematch with No. 10 Texas A&M-Commerce as they play a rescheduled, mid-week contest in Commerce, Texas on Tuesday.
STARTING 5:
1. The series between Cameron and Texas A&M-Commerce has been moved around multiples, originally scheduled for the final series of the regular season, Feb. 25 and 27, the games were moved up to Jan. 14 and 16, and then the second game was postponed and rescheduled for Tuesday.
2. Cameron's wins over UT Tyler put them over the .500 mark for the first time early January; Friday's win also put CU head coach
Emma Andrews over the 50 win mark for her coaching career.
3. The Aggies were very disruptive on defense against the Patriots, forcing 26 turnovers with 11 steals in game one and then 26 turnovers with 16 steals in game two.
4. The Lions, under the direction of seventh year head coach Jason Burton, debuted at No. 10 in the first edition of the WBCA DII Top-25 Poll last week and are 10-1 overall and 10-0 in league play.
5. Commerce's DesiRay Kernal is tied with CU's
Maighan Hedge for second in the Lone Star Conference in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per game; sophomore guard Dyani Robinson's 18.0 points per game would lead the conference, if she had played in all 11 of the Lions' contests.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Aggies wrapped up a three-game home stand with a pair of wins against UT Tyler. In the opener, CU was trailing 17-12 at the end of the first quarter but used a 24-10 second to take a nine-point advantage into the half. The Aggies dominated again in the third quarter (18-8) and coasted to a 72-58 win.
Stephanie Peterson had 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists, while
Katie King and
Kiara Lovings both had 12 points off the bench. CU's put the clamps on the Pats in game two, holding them to under 30 percent shooting from the field in a 74-41 victory. Hedge scored a team-high 17 points to go along with six assists and three steals, while Brown added 11 points off the CU bench.
ABOUT THE AGGIES:
The Aggies took care of business this weekend and moved to 6-5 on the season. Their success recently has come on the defensive end, where they are limiting teams to 64.9 points per game and a league best .255 three-point shooting percentage. CU has also increased their steals average to 9.6 while forcing the opposition into almost 20 turnovers per contest. Cameron has also picked up their three-point shooting, making over 10 in each of the last four outings, which has increased their season average to 8.8 triples per game. Hedge has led the charge, knocking down at least two threes in all but two games this season, while averaging 16.5 points, which is second best in the LSC. Hedge also leads the team with 3.7 assists and 1.8 steals per outing, while Peterson leads CU with 5.9 rebounds per game to go along with an 11.6 scoring average and 3.2 assists per outing. Lovings adds 8.5 points per game for CU while averaged 1.2 steals per game, and the freshman King scores 7.7 per game with an average of 1.6 swipes on the defensive end.
SCOUTING THE LIONS:
The ranked Lions have gone undefeated since their lone loss to Midwestern State on Jan. 10. They lead the conference with their 76.5 points per game and are outscoring their opponents by an average of 13.5 points. The Lions offense gets most of their offense in the paint and from the free throw line, where they average 17.8 makes per game at a 75.4 percent clip. A&M-Commerce has dominated the glass, out-rebounding their opposition by 7.1 boards per game, while pulling down 42.4 themselves. They keep the game hectic as well, forcing 21.3 turnovers per outing with 11.8 of those coming via steals, while giving the ball away 18.5 times per game on their own. Four Lions players are averaging over 10 points per game, including Robinson and Kernal. Chania Wright is averaging 10.9 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.6 steals, while Juliana Louis records 10.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per outing.
AGAINST A&M-C:
The Lions have had recent success against the Black and Gold, winning eight of the last 10, and that continued in their first matchup this season on Jan. 14. Cameron found themselves down 43-24 at the half during their earlier meeting this season as they went 0-6 from three in the first 20 minutes of action. The Aggies were able to outscore the Lions 23-26 in the third quarter, but they were unable to complete the comeback, falling 89-71. CU shot 38.7 percent from the field, but was just 3-15 from three and went 20-33 from the foul line. Hedge led the way with 20 points on 6-10 shooting, while
LaKya Leslie added a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double off the bench and Peterson had 10 points and nine boards. On the other side of the court, A&M-Commerce shot 44.4 percent from the field, going 4-17 from three and 21-27 from the charity stripe. Dyani Robinson led the Lions with 23 points, going 10-10 from the free throw line, while DesiRay Kernal scored 16 points and had four steals and Chania Wright added 10 points.

Cameron follows up their makeup date with the Lions with a pair of scheduled contests against St. Mary's this weekend. The two teams will play the opener in San Antonio, Texas on Friday at 5 p.m. and then will wrap up the series on Saturday at 3 p.m.
