Aggies make 2022 home debut

LAWTON – After their original home debut of the new year was postponed, the Aggies finally get their chance to play in front of their home crowd when they host UT Permian Basin and Angelo State this week.

Cameron has not played a home game since Dec. 2, 2021, but that changes on Thursday when they host the Falcons at 5:30 p.m. before welcoming the Rambelles to the Aggie Gym on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Aggies are trying to remain unbeaten in official Lone Star Conference games.

STARTING 5
1. Cameron moved to 3-0 in Lone Star Conference play last weekend by doing what they do best, making 11 three-pointers, recording 17 steals, and forcing 23 turnovers; they have forced over 20 turnovers eight times this season and made 10 or more threes nine times.
2. Korie Allensworth scored a career-best 22 points on 8-14 shooting (5-9 3FG) in the win over St. Edward's; the Aggies have had 10 20-plus point performances this season, eight by Maighan Hedge, one by Stephanie Peterson, and one by Allensworth.
3. Hedge is just 17 points away from tying the Cameron all-time scoring record of 1,602 points set by Jo Tahsuda (1980-83); the fourth-year guard already owns the program's assists record and is 20th among active players in career points.
4. The 4-11 Falcons are also a pressuring defensive team, averaging 13.5 steals per game, which ranks first in the LSC and 14th nationally.
5. Angelo State, in the first year under head coach Alesha Ellis, are 5-9 this season and are one of the top rebounding teams in the LSC, averaging nearly 40 boards per game.

ABOUT THE AGGIES
Now with three straight wins, Cameron is sitting at the top of the league standings with an 8-5 overall record. They average nearly 80 points per game, and despite shooting just 41 percent from the field, their 11 three-pointers per game leads the nation. They also make 12.8 foul shots at a 78.4 percent clip, which leads the LSC. The Aggies also turn teams over nearly 21 times per contest and hold them to under 30 percent shooting from three. Hedge leads the team and the conference with her 21.8 points per game while also averaging 3.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.4 steals for the Aggies. Additionally, Peterson averages 13.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 steals, Allensworth averages 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.2 steals, and Katie King averages 10.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.7 steals per outing.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS
Since starting the year 1-8, the Falcons have gone an even 3-3 but have lost their first three official conference games. They average just 60.7 points per game while shooting 37 percent from the field and 23.7 percent from three. UTPB forces on average 23.6 turnovers with their 13.4 steals per contest. Forward Alexus Wykoff is the lone Falcon averaging over 10 points, scoring 14 points per game. Avalon Munoz averages 9.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 2.5 steals, while Alexus Quaadman leads the team with 5.5 boards per contest.

LAST TIME AGAINST UTPB
Cameron won both meetings against the Falcons last season, including the home game on Feb. 1, which they benefited from big first and third quarters. CU forced 29 turnovers in the win with 17 steals and 11 made three-pointers. Hedge led the way with 25 points while Peterson added 11 points for the Aggies. Quaadman had a monster game for the Falcons, totaling 16 points and 15 rebounds while the team was 0-14 from three in the loss.

SCOUTING THE RAMBELLES
Angelo State lost their first eight games of the season, but have since gone 5-1, including two conference wins against Midwestern State and Texas Woman's. They average 65.6 points per game while shooting 39 percent from the field. ASU struggles from three, making just 22 percent of their shots from long range and turn the ball over 19.4 times per contest. Peyton Brown, Blakely Gerber, and Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant all average over 10.1 points per game with Brown leading the team with 4.1 assists per contest and Madeline Stephens averaging a team-best 7.9 rebounds to go along with a 9.6 scoring average.

LAST TIME AGAINST ASU
After over two years of not playing each other, CU and ASU renew their rivalry that last time went the Belles way. In December of 2019, the Aggies could not overcome an early deficit on their home floor, falling 99-89 to Angelo State. Hedge had 23 points and six assists but was just 1-9 from long range; Karley Miller added 10 points off the bench. Sawyer Lloyd is the top returning scorer for the Belles as she had 16 off the bench during that meeting.

WHO HAS NEXT
Following their first two home games of 2022, the Aggies are back on the road for a short trip to Texas Woman's on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 5:30 p.m. and then Midwestern State for a rematch of a November meeting on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. The next time CU is scheduled to be in the Aggie Gym is Feb. 3 against West Texas A&M.
