Aggies Win to Open 2022-23

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Three players reached double figures to lead Cameron to a 67-59 victory over UC Colorado Springs Friday night in the season opener at Gallogly Events Center.

The Aggies would lead the match coast to coast, taking the lead 22 seconds into the game and never looking back.


Alena Wilson led the way with 19 points, shooting 7-of-14 from the floor. Korie Allensworth would sink all five free throws and 4-of-11 overall to chip in 14 points. Karley Miller came off the bench and posted 11 thanks to a 2-of-6 effort from beyond the arc.

Kloe Heidebrecht, Katie King, and Kailyn Lay finished with six points, Hallie Horton added three and Taliyah Johnson had two.


Lay dished out four assists, with Johnson and King next up with three.


Wilson was a rebound short of her first double-double, finishing with nine rebounds to lead all players on the boards, while Allensworth picked up six, with King pulling down five.


As a team, the Aggies finished with 40 rebounds, 14 assists, and snagged 11 steals, all while shooting 40.4 percent overall.


Miller knocked down a three 22 seconds into the game to open the scoring. Wilson would make a free throw and a layup to extend the CU lead to 6-0 two minutes into the game; she would score eight straight points in the quarter to help the Aggies stretch the lead to 13-6 at the media timeout. Allensworth would knock down two free throws to close out the scoring in the first quarter, with Cameron leading 21-10.

The second quarter had more offense from both teams as the Black-and-Gold would outscore the Mountain Lions 17-14. Allensworth scored the first five points of the stanza, and Lay added a layup to give the Aggies a 28-10 lead. UCCS used an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 32-20 with 2:46 until the break. Cameron would close the quarter with a 6-4 advantage to go into the half leading 38-24.


Colorado Springs opened the second half with a 7-3 rally to trim the gap to 10, at 41-31 at the 7:31 mark. Through the rest of the quarter, UCCS would outscore Cameron 12-7, with a 6-0 run to close the final 3:30, closing the deficit to 48-43 heading to the last quarter.

The Aggie vets came to life in the fourth, taking over the scoring. Allensworth, King and Miller would be responsible for 11 of the 19 points scored in the quarter. Miller would swipe the ball, go down, and make a layup to open the scoring. The teams would trade baskets, with UCCS never getting closer than five points, at 57-52 with 6:34 left. King would make two shots from the charity stripe to give the Aggies a 10-point lead with 1:35 to play and would go on to win 67-59.

The Black-and-Gold will take on Adams State tomorrow at 5:30 pm.
