Cameron Hits the Road to Kick off Second Half of the Season

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women's basketball hit the road to kick off the second half of the season, traveling to Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M to close out 2022 and open 2023.

The Aggies will face the Lady Chaps in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, Dec. 30, at 5:30 pm. While they head to Canyon, Texas, to play the Lady Buffs on Jan. 1 at 1:00 pm.


STARTING 5:
1. The Aggies closed out the first half of the season with a 99-77 victory over rival Midwestern State in Lawton. Cameron was led by Katie King with 18 points, joining her with double-digits Alena Wilson (16), Korie Allensworth (15), and Kiara Lovings and Karley Miller (11).

2. Alena Wilson leads the team in scoring and rebounds and shoots an efficient 47.8 percent from the floor. She ranks 12th in the LSC with her 13.9 ppg and ninth with 7.7 rebounds. CU has three players averaging double-figures. Joining Wilson are Korie Allensworth (12.9 ppg) and Katie King (10.0 ppg).

3. Lubbock Christian went 1-1 at the Holiday Hoops Classic in Vegas, falling to #13 Georgia Southwestern State 70-59 and beating No. 15 Montana State Billings 60-58. In the victory, Audrey Robertson led LCU with a career-high 19 points.

4. WT traveled to the Tampa Holiday Classic over the break beating Florida Tech 62-33. The seventh-ranked Lady Buffs fell to host No. 9 Tampa 67-51. After the loss, West Texas falls to 17th in the most recent D2SIDA polls.

5. WT is led by Karley Motchenbacher with 11.8 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game. The Lady Buffs spread out their scoring, with nine players averaging more than 5.5 ppg.


LAST TIME OUT:

Cameron would knock off rival Midwestern State 99-77. The most points the Aggies have scored 100 in a win over Angelo State on Jan. 22, 2022. CU remained unbeaten at home with the win, moving to 4-0 in the Aggie Gym. Five members of the Black-and-Gold recorded double figures, led by Katie King with 18 points, Alena Wilson scored 16, Korie Allensworth added 15, and Kiara Lovings and Karley Miller recorded 11. Cameron moved above .500 on the season, at 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the Lone Star Conference. The Aggies would hit an impressive 58.6 percent of their shots from the floor and shoot 45 percent from beyond the arc, sinking nine three-pointers.


ABOUT THE AGGIES:
CU is now 5-5, 3-2 after a win over Midwestern State to close out the first half of the season. The Aggies have picked things up in conference play and are averaging 71.2 points per game, the second most in the LSC, while giving up 69.8 points on the defensive end. Cameron currently sits in the middle of the pack within the conference but is tied for the lead in the West Division at 1-0. Alena Wilson leads the team in scoring and rebounds and shoots an efficient 47.8 percent from the floor. She ranks 12th in the LSC with her 13.9 ppg and ninth with 7.7 rebounds per game. Katie King has a league-best 6.4 assists per game in conference play.


SCOUTING THE LADY CHAPS:

Lubbock Christian is 8-4, 3-1 on the season after splitting their last four games. In their previous LSC games, they dropped a game to Texas A&M International on the road 60-47 before taking down Texas A&M-Kingsville 76-61. Over the break, they traveled to Las Vegas to participate in the Holiday Hoops Classic. They lost to No. 13 Georgia Southwestern State 70-59 and beat 15th-ranked Montana State Billings. LCU leads the LSC with 71.8 ppg in conference play. Grace Foster leads the Lady Chaps with 14.9 ppg and 9.3 rebounds a game, which is the second most in the LSC.

LAST TIME AGAINST LCU:

Despite the Lady Chaps recent success, Cameron owns a 9-7 record over them all-time. However, LCU is on a five-game winning streak. In the last meeting, the Aggies had a slow start to their game against Lubbock Christian. Cameron could not get their offense going, falling 75-49 at the Aggie Gym. Meighan Hedge scored 15 points for the Aggies, who only made two triples in the loss.


SCOUTING THE LADY BUFFS:

17th-ranked West Texas A&M is 10-2, 3-1 on the season. The Lady Buffs are 1-1 against top-10 teams. Both losses for WT came in the last four games, dropping the game at Texas A&M-Kingsville, and falling to No. 9 Tampa at the Tampa Holiday Classic. They are averaging 70.3 points per game while giving up 58.3 points. West Texas has a the conference best 3-point percentage at 40.6 in LSC play. Karley Motschenbacher leads the Lady Buffs with 11.8 ppg and 7.7 rebounds a game.

LAST TIME AGAINST WT:

Cameron lost to West Texas in Cayon, Texas, 75-65. The Aggies were led by Stephanie Peterson, who recorded 24 points and seven rebounds. As a team, Cameron shot 34.3 percent from the field and well below their season average from three, going 6-22 from long range. They also knocked down 13-of-16 foul shots, with five coming out of Maighan Hedge's hands, who finished with 13 points, 10 of which came in the second 20 minutes of play. WT shot almost the same as Cameron but made 10 triples and was 21-24 from the charity stripe. They also out-rebounded the Aggies 50-36 and had the benefit of 32 bench points, 16 coming from Taylor Williams.


WHO HAS NEXT:

The Aggies will return home to host Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 5:30 pm, before closing out the first week of the new year with Western New Mexico on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 1:00 pm.
