LAWTON – Cameron women's basketball looks to get back on track this week with their final two road games of the regular season starting at West Texas A&M on Tuesday.
Just two away games remain on the Aggies 2021-22 schedule before wrapping up the regular season at home for three more games in the Aggie Gym. Their first road trip this week is to Canyon, Texas to face the always tough Lady Buffs, who currently sit in front of them in the Lone Star Conference standings.
STARTING 5
1. The Aggies and Lady Buffs were scheduled to play a non-conference game on Feb. 3, but winter weather in the region halted the trip by the visiting team; Tuesday's battle will count towards the league standings.
2. After last week's 1-2 record, Cameron went from leading the conference standings to being ranked fifth with an 8-3 record in league play behind Texas Woman's, Texas A&M-Commerce, WT, and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
3. CU guard
Maighan Hedge has averaged 18.3 points over her four career games against WT with the team going 2-2 over that span; Hedge has led CU in scoring 16 times this season and has been over 10 points in all 21 games and over 20 points 13 times.
4. West Texas A&M has won four straight including a 55-48 win over No. 13/15 Lubbock Christian less than a week ago.
5. Transfers Zamorye Roberts and Alivia Lewis lead the Lady Buffs with Roberts averaging 12.4 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.2 steals and Lewis averaging 8.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game.
ABOUT THE AGGIES
Cameron suffered two big losses against top-15 ranked opponents Texas A&M-Commerce and Lubbock Christian last week, but were able to sneak out a one-point win over Eastern New Mexico to come out of the week with a 1-2 record, putting them at 13-8 on the year.
Still one of the top scoring teams in the nation, the Aggies are averaging over 77 points per outing. They are shooting 41 percent from the field and a conference best 34.7 percent from three, making 10.4 per game, which leads all of Division II. CU's scoring margin went from over 10 points going into last week to 6.6 as they give up just over 70 points and a .420 field goal percentage to their opposition. Making up for their -9.5 rebounding margin, Cameron forces 21 turnovers per game with 12.2 of those coming on steals and resulting in 21.6 points on average.
Individually, Hedge's 21.6 points per game leads the LSC and is third nationally. The fourth-year guard is also averaging 3.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 steals while shooting over 48 percent from the floor and 46 percent from three.
Stephanie Peterson does it all for CU, averaging 13.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.7 steals while
Katie King averages 10.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 3.0 steals for the Aggies.
