Aggies open LSC Tournament with rematch against the Greyhounds

LAWTON – The Cameron women's basketball team looks to begin their postseason run with a Lone Star Conference Tournament first-round battle with Eastern New Mexico, who they beat just a few weeks ago.

The Aggies earned the six seed in the conference tournament with an 11-5 league record this season. Their reward is a rematch in the Aggie Gym with the Greyhounds, who the defeated by one point back on Feb. 10. Cameron hopes a postseason run can boost their resume for the big dance, the NCAA Tournament.

STARTING 5
1. The Aggies' 16-win season is the most wins by a Cameron women's basketball program in 20 years; the 2001-22 squad won 25 games under head coach Adrian Wiggins, current head coach Emma Andrews coach at Fresno State.
2. For just the third time this season, Cameron out-rebounded an opponent, grabbing four more rebounds than the Javelinas back on Saturday afternoon; CU is 3-0 when out-rebounding their opponents.
3. Stephanie Peterson was all over the place for the Aggies last week, averaging 11 points, 7.7 rebounds, four assists, 1.7 blocks, and 3.7 steals over the three-game span.
4. The loss at Cameron back on Feb. 10 started a four-game losing streak for the Greyhounds, which was snapped in the final game of the year when they beat in-state rival Western New Mexico at home 66-43.
5. Graduate student guard Iyanna McCurdy had a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double against the Mustangs, her seventh of the season as she leads the Greyhounds with 13.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game this year.

ABOUT THE AGGIES
Cameron was 6-1 in the month of January, putting them at the top of the league standings. They then went 4-4 in the month of February, arguably their toughest stretch of the season to finish with a 16-10 overall record and a 11-5 conference mark. CU averages 76 points per game, shooting almost 40 percent from the field while making a league-high 10.1 three-pointers per contest at a 33 percent clip. They also make 75 percent of their shots from the charity stripe. Despite last Saturday's result, CU still is at the bottom of the LSC in rebounding, getting out-boarded by an average of 8.6, but still turns teams over 21 times per contest with an average of 12 steals. Maighan Hedge's numbers have dropped a bit, but the fourth-year guard still leads CU and the LSC in scoring with 20.6 points per game. The Melbourne, Australia native also averages 3.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.9 steals for CU. Peterson is second on the team with 13.5 points per outing to go along with averages of 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.9 steals, and 0.9 blocks. Additionally, Katie King averages 10.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.7 steals, completing the do-it-all trio for the Aggies.

CAMERON IN THE LSC TOURNAMENT
The Aggies won just their second LSC Tournament game in 15 appearances during last year's postseason with an 87-76 win over MSU during the first round on their home floor. They are now 2-15 all-time and including this season have made the conference postseason in four of the last five seasons. Cameron has not faced their first-round opponent Eastern New Mexico in the postseason, but are 0-3 against A&M-Commerce, who they would play in the quarterfinal matchup if they were to win on Tuesday night.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
After a solid start to 2021-22, Eastern New Mexico had a rough conclusion to their schedule, going 2-6 in the month of February to finish the regular season with a 10-13 overall record and a 6-10 league mark. They are averaging just under 61 points per game, shooting 36 percent from the field and just 26 percent from three, making a league-low four shots from long range per outing. ENMU is a solid team on the glass, out-rebounding opponents by an average of 3.8 and turn teams over 17 times per game with 8.8 of those coming on steals. McCurdy is one of two players averaging over 13 points for the Greyhounds and Natalie Stice averages 13.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.6 steals for the team from Portales, N.M.

THIS SEASON AGAINST ENMU
In their only meeting this season on Feb. 10, the Aggies and Greyhounds played what might have been one of the most exciting games in the Aggie Gym this season. Cameron led by just six at the half (39-33) and by four (53-49) going into the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds tied the game at 71 with six seconds left, but a Peterson layup put CU on top by two with just over a second on the clock. ENMU got a questionable foul call in their favor that sent Anasha Hurt to the foul line with try and tie the game with less than a second to go, but the guard missed the second free throw to give CU the one-point victory, 73-72. King led the Aggies with 18 points while Peterson added 10 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and three steals in the win. McCurdy paced the Greyhounds with 24 points and nine boards.

CU AGAINST THE BRACKET
Overall, the Aggies went 7-6 this season against teams the made the Lone Star Conference Tournament. They were 6-3 against teams playing in the first round on Tuesday and 1-3 against the top-4 teams in the league standings. Cameron lost their only game against Texas A&M-Commerce this season, their quarterfinal opponent if they win on Tuesday, and were 3-1 against the three teams they could face in the semifinal (UT Tyler, Midwestern State, Texas Women's) if they made it that far in the bracket.
