CU hits the road to face No. 9 Javelinas and Dustdevils

LAWTON – The Aggie softball team has another tough test this weekend as they hit the road to face No. 9 Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday and then Texas A&M International on Sunday. 
 
After starting the season 12-6, Cameron opened Lone Star Conference play by sweeping a doubleheader against former No. 5 ranked Angelo State and then losing two to now No. 15 Lubbock Christian. They now face another top-10 ranked opponent for their first conference road trip of 2022. 
 
The Aggies enter the week batting .309 this season with 134 runs scored, 60 extra-base hits, and 33 stolen bases. Breley Webb leads the way with a .500 average, totaling 34 hits, 13 runs score, and 15 RBI. Five other Aggies are batting over .320 with Karis Clark leading the team with 18 RBI and five homers, same as Khmari Edwards who has scored 30 runs and is 11-11 in stolen base attempts. 
 
In the circle, CU has a combined ERA of 4.00 with 116 strikeouts and a .283 opposing batting average. Josie Swafford, who is also hitting .397 with 15 RBI, is 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA and 34 K's in 41.2 innings while Jocelyn Bright is 5-3 with a 4.05 era, 43 strikeouts and a .262 batting average against her. 
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville enters their twin-bill against CU with a 19-2 record, going 3-1 in league play after splitting a doubleheader against St. Mary's last Sunday. They are hitting .373 with 160 runs scored, 72 extra-base hits, and 53 stolen bases. Matisen Onofrei is hitting .500 with 17 RBI while Kayla Gonzales has six homers and a team-high 26 RBI. The have one of the best pitching staffs in Division II with a combined ERA of 0.99 led by Beth Montes, who is 7-0 with 39 K's in 46.2 innings, and Saidi Castillo, who is 5-1 with 38 strikeouts in 38.2 innings.
 
The Dustdevils went 1-3 in their first conference weekend and are now 7-16 on the year. Their offense is batting .247 with 62 runs scored and 45 extra-base hits. Heather Ruiz and Victoria Gonzalez are the only International batters with an above .300 average. Ruiz is hitting .418 with 10 RBI and Gonzalez is hitting .313. In the circle, the have a ERA of 5.03 with 103 combined K's and a .281 average against them. Darrian Smith owns a 3.52 ERA with 70 strikeouts and a .216 opponents' batting average. 
 
Cameron and the Javelinas are set to play two games starting at 2 p.m. in Kingsville, Texas on Friday and then the doubleheader in Laredo, Texas on Sunday is scheduled for a noon start. All four games will be available on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network. 
 
The Aggies will be back at home next weekend, March 18 and 20, when they host St. Mary's and St. Edward's for a pair of LSC doubleheaders at McMahon Field.
