LAWTON – Cameron softball faces another tough weekend as they visit No. 20 West Texas A&M on Friday and then Eastern New Mexico on Sunday for a pair of Lone Star Conference doubleheaders.
The Aggies have split their last five twin bills after going 2-2 last weekend against Texas Woman's and Midwestern State at home. Now 19-15 on the year and 7-9 in league play, which has them in a tie for ninth in the LSC standings.
This season, Cameron is batting .295 with 82 extra-base hits, including 35 homers, while scoring 5.3 runs per contest. The lineup is led by fourth-year player
Breley Webb who is hitting .413 with 17 runs scored, seven doubles, three homers, and 17 RBI. She leads a group of six Aggies that are batting over .310. All-American
Khmari Edwards is batting .324 with 39 runs scored, seven homers, 23 RBI, and 20 stolen bases.
Cameron's pitching staff has combined for a 3.63 ERA with 205 strikeouts and a .283 opponents' batting average.
Josie Swafford leads the way with a 2.85 ERA and 78 K's while also hitting .347 for CU. Webb has been dominant in her last four appearances in the circle, striking out 26 batters and giving up just one run over the 17.2-inning span.
The Buffs are 19-10 with eight of their wins and losses coming against LSC opponents, including three straight defeats after splitting with St. Edwards and getting swept by St. Mary's last weekend. They are hitting .336 with 194 runs scored this season led by Brittni Rufus, Ruby Salzman, and Diana Murtha, who are all hitting over .390; Murtha leads the team with 12 homers and 36 RBI. WT has a team ERA of 2.88 and is holding opposing batters to an average of .249. Freshman Heidi Vortherms is the ace, putting up a 1.93 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 80 innings.
Eastern New Mexico is just 10-22 this spring with a 3-13 conference record after going 1-3 last weekend against St. Mary's and St. Edward's. Offensively, they are hitting .227 with 113 runs scored and just 41 extra-base hits. Freshman Lisette Urquidez has been a bright spot, hitting .374 with 18 runs scored, seven homers, and 32 RBI. The Greyound hurlers have a combined ERA of 6.12 with opposing hitters putting up a .319 average against them. Sophomore Brook Leger has been the go-to arm, posting a 3.10 ERA with 138 K's in 104 innings of work.
Friday's doubleheader against the Lady Buffs is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas. Sunday's twin bill against ENMU is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start in Portales, N.M. All four games will be streamed via the Lone Star Conference Digital Network.
