LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women's basketball team opens 2023 inside the Aggie Gym by hosting Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico this week. The Aggies will host the Greyhounds on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 5:30 pm, before welcoming in the Mustangs on Saturday for a contest at 1:00 pm.
STARTING 5:
1. The Aggies dropped the 2023 opener to West Texas A&M 81-48 in Canyon, Texas. The game started close early with a three-point game after the first quarter. WT would pull away by halftime with a 15-point lead. Katie King scored a team-high 16 points, with three steals, two rebounds and an assist.
2. Alena Wilson leads the team in scoring and rebounds and shoots an efficient 45 percent from the floor. She averages 12.3 ppg and 7.7 rebounds a game. CU has four players averaging more than nine points per game. Joining Wilson are Korie Allensworth (11.6 ppg), Katie King (9.7 ppg), and Karley Miller (9.0 ppg).
3. Eastern New Mexico split the first two games back from the break, falling to Angelo State 73-63. Deja Adrian led the Greyhounds with a game-high 23 points. Eastern averages 65.6 ppg and allows 60.4 ppg. ENMU holds a 36.2% field goal percentage and 28.6% shooting from three-point range.
4. The Mustangs won their first conference game over Angelo State after losing the first five LSC games. In the 54-50 win over ASU, Eliza Joynes scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. WNMU would capitalize on ASU's 16 turnovers scoring 10 points from their errors. Western scores 64.3 ppg and allows 59.6 ppg.

Cameron fell to No. 17 West Texas A&M 81-48 in Canyon, Texas. The game was a one-possession game heading into the second quarter as WT led 18-15. The Lady Buffs pulled away, building a 15-point lead at the half. Katie King had a team-high 16 points, with three steals, two rebounds, and an assist. The Aggies shot 30.6 percent from the floor and 27.7 percent from three.
ABOUT THE AGGIES:
CU is now 6-7, 3-4 LSC, 1-2 DIV., after dropping both games over the weekend. The Aggies are averaging 62.6 points per game in conference play while surrendering 73.6 ppg. Cameron currently sits in the middle of the pack within the conference with a 3-4 record. Alena Wilson leads the team in scoring and rebounds and shoots an efficient 45.0 percent from the floor. She ranks 15th in the LSC with her 12.3 ppg and ninth with 7.1 rebounds per game. Katie King has the third most assists per game (4.7) in conference play.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS:
Eastern New Mexico is 6-5, 3-3 LSC, 1-1 DIV., on the season after dropping three of their last four games. In their previous game, EMNU fell to Angelo State 73-63 after a slow start crippled their late surge, falling short at home. Deja Adrian scored a game-high 23 points, and Bella Stone added 12 points. Adrian leads the Greyhounds with 16.8 ppg and 7.2 rebounds per game, while Edecia Beck averages 11.0 ppg and 6.1 rebounds per game. ENMU ranks 10th in the LSC with 65.6 ppg while allowing the fifth-lowest points per game at 60.4. Adrian scores the second-most points per game and grabs the eighth-most rebounds.
LAST TIME AGAINST ENMU:
The Last time these two teams met was the in the conference tournament, where the 11th-seeded Aggies knocked off the third-seeded Greyhounds 88-85. The Greyhounds showed up ready to play and scored 26 in the opening quarter, led by 10 points from Bella Stone. ENMU was 5-6 from the foul line in the opening quarter. CU picked up the defense in the second, holding the Greyhounds to just six made field goals and 14 points. On the other end of the floor, the home team shot over 61 percent from the field and scored 23. The Black-and-Gold held a one-point advantage at the half, 41-40. The Aggies shot 53 percent from the field, was 12-28 from three and 14-21 from the charity stripe.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS:
Western New Mexico comes into the weekend with a record of 3-7, 1-5 LSC, and 1-1 DIV. The Mustangs snapped a five-game losing streak, beating UTPB 69-66 on Sunday. They are averaging 64.3 points per game while giving up 59.6 points. In conference play, they score the least points per game at 57.2 while surrendering 60.7 ppg. WNMU is led by Sydney Wright with 12.4 ppg, while Diamond Moore averages 11.3 ppg and 6.5 rebounds per game.
LAST TIME AGAINST WNMU:
Cameron used a solid defensive presence to take down the Mustangs 85-60. The Aggies forced 35 turnovers and used a big third quarter to overcome WNMU. Cameron shot just 38 percent from the field and was 8-33 from long distance in the win but did hit on 19 of their 21 free throw attempts and scored 30 points off of Mustang turnovers. Of the 35 turnovers by the Mustangs, 16 came on Aggie steals. Maighan Hedge continued her hot start to the season, scoring a game-high 21 points on 14 shots while also assisting on six made buckets. Karley Miller made four three-pointers off the bench for 12 points, and Katie King added 10. The offense exploded for 34 points in the third quarter, shooting 59 percent from the floor and 12-13 from the foul line. Western New Mexico shot 40 percent from the field, was 4-9 from three, and 12-17 from the charity stripe. Cassandra Vickery led the way with 12 points, while Destiney Johnson had eight points and 11 rebounds.

The Aggies will travel to Odessa, Texas, to face UT Permian Basin on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 5:15 pm. before facing Angelo State on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1:00 pm.
