No. 14 Aggies Fall in Opening Game of West Texas A&M Series, 2-1

CANYON, Texas – It was a tight affair throughout but in the end, the Buffaloes of West Texas (15-2, 6-1 LSC) topped the Cameron Aggies (9-2, 8-2 LSC) in their first nighttime baseball game of the season, 2-1, at Wilder Park in Canyon on Friday.

CU was held to just five hits, their fewest of the season, as WT’s Justin Kuks tossed 7.2 innings of tight baseball to keep the No. 14 Aggies out of their usual rhythm.

The Buffs struck first in their half of the second after CU shortstop Joe Halley mishandled a sharply hit ground ball from WT’s Jess Cooper, allowing Kendall Boone to score on the throwing error.

In the seventh, they added what proved to be the winning run as Trey Horn doubled down the left field line to drive in Brad Elders.

In the eighth, the Aggies found some success at the plate as pinch hitter Kaleb Brawner got it going with a single to right field. Josh Dawson knocked Brawner over on a single through the left side and put the Ags in business. Kuks got Andrew Garcia to strikeout to end his evening as WT elected to bring in Chad McLin.

McLin’s first batter was center fielder Chase Larsson who leads the Aggies at the plate this season. Larsson kept his strong batting up with a rope to right field to bring Brawner in to make it 2-1.

It was the only offense the Aggies could muster on the night as McLin left the game to bring in the Buffs’ closer Zack Walker to quell the storm. It was four-up, four-down for Walker as he struck out the final Aggie batter to get out of the inning.

In the ninth, Walker struck out the first two Aggies and forced a ground out to end the game.

The loss snaps the Aggies three-game winning streak and pushes the Buffs streak to 10.

Larsson and Dawson both tallied two hits on the night in four at bats while Ricky Cramer was tagged with the loss on 6.2 innings pitched. Cramer scattered seven hits while allowing two runs (one earned) and struck out 12, the most by a Cameron pitcher this season.

The two teams return to the diamond tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch time.
