No. 14 Aggies Split Doubleheader with Buffs as Offenses Explode

CANYON, Texas – In a day that featured a combined 55 hits and 38 runs over two games, it was West Texas who took away a 2-1 series victory over the No. 14 Cameron Aggies in Canyon on Saturday.

In game one, CU got evened the series up with a 19 hit outburst to win 14-2. In the rubber game, the Buffs pounded out 21 hits to lock up the series with a 16-6 victory.

The split pushes the Aggies record to 10-3 overall and 9-3 in the Lone Star Conference. Their victory in game one also snapped WT’s ten-game winning streak. The Buffs improved to 16-3 and 7-2 in conference play.

Game one was a scheduled seven-inning game and was highlighted by a four-run fourth inning and six-run fifth inning for CU.

Chase Larsson and Kenny Held lead the Aggies in the opener as both pounded out four hits in five at-bats. Held added to his team best RBI total (21) with five more in game one. Larsson also pushed hit team-best batting average over .500 to .522 for the season.

Four Aggies, including Larsson and Held, also sent balls out of the park as Andrew Garcia and Josh Dawson picked up a home run in the opener.

Corey Davidson (3-0) picked up the win after scattering five hits over six innings and allowing just two runs.

In game two, both offenses found life as the two teams combined for 22 runs in the run-rule shortened game.

Larsson and Dawson led the Aggies at the plate, both with a pair of hits in three at-bats, with Larsson adding his second home-run of the day.

CU added single runs in the second and third innings and two in both the fifth and six innings but were unable to match the Buffs’ offense that pounded out runs in all but two innings including six in the fifth and five in the sixth.

Jerry A’Hearn (1-1) was tagged with the loss, his first of the season, after throwing two innings and allowing four runs on four hits.

Cameron will return to the diamond on Friday, March 11 when they host Newman at McCord Field in Lawton. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
