LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron Aggies baseball team (24-13, 17-10 LSC) pounded out a season-high 24 hits and 28 runs en route to take game three of the series over Lone Star Conference rival Southeastern Oklahoma (23-14, 19-8 LSC) at McCord Field on Sunday, 28-19.
The top of the lineup, Josh Dawson, Kenny Held and Chase Larsson, combined to go 11-for-16 at the plate with a combined 16 RBI and four homers (two grand slams) to lead the offense. Every Aggie batter scored at least one run and all but one also knocked in a run. Dawson was also hit by three pitches in the game.
As a whole, the Ags were 24-of-48 (.500) at the plate as they won a crucial LSC game at home.
The two teams also combined for 12 home runs on a windy day at McCord Field. With strong winds blowing out of the park through center field, many balls carried up and out of the park.
James Rhodes picked up the win on 2.1 innings of work. The senior scattered nine hits and surrendered 10 runs while walking six and striking out two. Corey Davidson got the save on 3.2 innings of work after allowing six hits and four runs.
The Storm set the tone for the day with back-to-back homers in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. After the two teams traded scoreless innings, the high scoring affair began.
The Aggies racked up seven runs in the second, highlighted by back-to-back slams from the nation’s top two home runs hitters in Larsson and Held, to go up 7-2.
Southeastern posted on a single run in the third and four more in the fourth to rally back to 7-7.
The Black and Gold were able to get more cushion in the bottom of the frame to the tune of nine runs as Held got his second roundtripper of the day, this time a grand slam to left field. They ended the inning with nine runs on six hits to take a 16-7 lead.
The Storm were able to get four more runs in the fifth but the scoring continued with Larsson’s second smash of the day, another grand slam to match Held, as the Aggies took a 21-11 lead into the sixth.
In the sixth, the two teams matched each other with six run innings, both on six hits, to go into the seventh and potentially final inning 27-17.
The visitors extended the game with a pair of runs to make it 27-19 on K.C. Pfister’s third homer of the day.
That ended the scoring for Southeastern while the Aggies added a single run in the bottom of the eighth to secure their 17th conference victory of the season.
Southeastern put seven pitchers on the bump but it was Vance Woodruff who was tagged with the loss after working two innings and allowing five runs.
Pfister, Blake Gentry, and Eric Walker were the offensive workhorses for the Storm as they combined for 12 hits and 14 RBI. Gentry had two homers, Pfister finished with three and Walker added one to keep the Storm in the game.
The Aggies will now step out of conference play and travel up the road to Chickasha to take on USAO on Tuesday, April 19. First pitch is slated for 3 P.M.
