ABILENE, Texas – Jerry Pajak threw the third complete game in as many as the Cameron Aggies (33-14) shutout regular season conference champion Incarnate Word (35-15), 7-0, at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene, Texas at the 2011 Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship.

Pajak scattered six hits over nine innings of work without allowing a run to keep the majority of the Aggie pitchers fresh. He struck out four batters and walked just three. It was the third complete game for CU after Ricky Cramer and James Rhodes opened the tournament with full outings of their own.

The Aggies, as they have done in every game thus far in the tournament, got on the board first as Josh Dawson led off with a walk and advanced to second on a balk from UIW’s Joe Gomez.

Following a Kenny Held walk, Andrew Garcia ripped a single through the left side to drive in Dawson to make it 1-0.

After Held reached on an infield single and advanced on Gomez’s second balk of the day, Joe Halley extended the CU lead in the bottom of the third with a slicer into left field to drive in Held from third.

In the fourth, the Aggies plated another run by way of a pair of singles and a blooper to center field from Chase Larsson to make it a 3-0 ball game.

The Cardinals threatened in the seventh with a Hector Flores single to center, but the Aggies converted a strikeout-throwout play after Pajak struck out Matt Flores and Ortega gunned down Hector Flores attempting to steal second.

Garcia punched an Ethan Lutz pitch off the center field wall for a two bagger and was knocked in by a Halley single in the seventh to make it 4-0 in favor of the Aggies.

Ortega followed Halley with a single through the left side of his own and designated hitter Taylor Lyons loaded the bases with another left field single.

With the bases loaded, Kaleb Brawer took new relief pitcher Zach Anderson’s first pitch to his left ankle to take first and bring in a run to put the Aggies up 5-0.

Anderson followed with a five pitch walk to Dawson to bring in another run, making it 6-0.

They stranded two runners in the inning but not after extending their lead by three more runs.

The Aggies extended their lead to 7-0 as Held got a lead off walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Garcia. Halley’s groundout to the second baseman advanced Held over to third and Nate Valdez’s line drive into center field brought the right fielder in to score.

In the top of the ninth, the Cardinals had back-to-back flyouts but extended the game with a Daniel Qualls single through the left side. Down in the count, Brandon Clark set a dribbler down to Garcia who stepped on first to end the game and propel the Aggies into tomorrow’s championship game.

It will be the first appearance for the Aggies, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, in the tournament championship game. There are still three teams alive in the 2011 championships with Southwestern Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma, and Incarnate Word all having lost one game each.

All three teams will be in action for at least one more game today with the winner of tonight’s 7 p.m. game advancing to play the Aggies tomorrow.

First pitch for the championship game is set for 1 p.m.
