Aggies Exact Revenge On Bulldgos

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Feb. 21, 2012) — Cameron got off to a sluggish start in Weatherford Wednesday, but thanks to a big fourth inning, the Aggies came away with a 7-2 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State.

SWOSU (6-3, 0-0) struck first, plating two in the home half of the first, as Adam Gendall knocked a 2-run single with the bases loaded off CU (8-4, 0-0) starting pitcher Clay Vanderlaan. Fortunately for the Black and Gold, Vanderlaan was able to induce a couple of ground outs to get out of the inning without further damage.

The Aggies tried a different approach for the rest of the game, sending a new pitcher to the mound in each of the remaining innings. The progressive style worked, as the Cameron pitchers combined to only allow five hits for the remainder of the game. Justin Watley picked up the victory for CU, drawing the right inning in the carousel of pitchers.

“We pitched good … that was the key,” said Head Coach Todd Holland. “We hit really well. And, overall, we played well as a team. We were a little slow at the start, but once we settled in we played pretty good baseball.”

Cameron hit its stride in a dominant fourth inning, plating six runs on six hits. Kevin Waukau, Benshell Garcia and Nick Smith each picked up RBIs in the inning, but it was Taylor Lyons who broke the game open with a three-run bomb to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Black and Gold.

“Taylor’s (Lyons) hit really got us going,” Holland said. “Their guy threw great until that inning. We finally got to him. We needed that inning.”

The Aggies added an insurance run in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of three walks by its opponent to score the run.

James Rhodes, Kyle Ketchum and Aaron Kleekamp finished out the game for Cameron, sealing the team’s eighth victory this season.

Cameron will look to add to its momentum with a home series this weekend against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. The teams will play two games Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., and will finish up with a game at 1 p.m. Sunday at McCord Field.
