Cameron Baseball Claims First Two Games of Series

LAWTON – The Cameron University baseball team came out swinging today at McCord Field and picked up two wins over the University of Arkansas-Ft. Smith. The Aggies collected a 6-2 victory in game one of the double header and went on to dominate the Lions in the second game, securing a 13-2 win.

The Black and Gold got things going right away in the first game. In the first inning, CU grabbed three runs on four hits. Tyler Cox had the first RBI of the day. The catcher singled through the left side allowing Andy Garcia and Josh Dawson come around to score. The next run came when Benshell Garcia was handed a walk with the bases loaded, brining Brad Blumer across home plate.

The Lions would add their first run to the scoreboard in the top of the second. Christian Allen reached on an error by the second baseman and then was brought in on a double to center field by Gordon Miller.

CU would pin on some more runs in the fourth inning. Taylor Lyons brought in B. Garcia and Kevin Lum when he singled up the middle. Both runs were unearned as the two men found their way on base by a pair of errors.

Arkansas-Ft. Smith earned its final run of the game in the top of the fifth. The Lions’ Ben Smith hit into a double play, but still produced an RBI as it allowed Nick Gumm, who was on third, to score.

The Aggies men sealed their victory in the bottom of the eighth when Kevin Waukau homered over the centerfield fence, making the final score 6-2.

Senior Wade Myatt clenched the win for the Ags, letting him improve his record to 4-2 for the year. Myatt nearly went the distance for his team, pitching eight of the nine innings. James Rhodes was brought in to close out the game in the ninth.

The Black and Gold’s momentum continued into the second game of the series. Once again, CU wasted no time in gathering runs. Blumer had an RBI single to right field in the top of the first. His hit brought Dawson in, who got on base by reaching on an error by the second baseman.

RBIs from Nick Smith, Lyons and Cox allowed the Aggies to add four more runs to its total in the bottom of the second—an inning in which the team had six hits and the Lions made a single error. Another run would be tacked on in the third when Lyons had an RBI double to center field, bringing Smith in to score.

The Lions’ only two runs of the game would be collected in the fourth inning. The designated hitter for the squad reached on an error, allowing Austin Rawls and Thomas Shaddy to come around to home plate.

CU’s bats really heated up in the bottom of the fourth. The Black and Gold produced some six runs on four hits and one error by the Lions. Earning RBIs for the Aggie squad were Kaleb Brawner, Lum, Smith, Lyons, Roland Baza and Blumer.

One more run was secured by the Ags in the fifth inning. Lum scored when Smith reached on an error by the third baseman.

Clay Vanderlaan was credited with the win for CU. The senior gave up only three hits and had nine strikeouts. Vanderlaan is now 2-0 on the season.

Cameron baseball coach Todd Holland was very pleased with how his pitchers performed in today’s games.

“Our pitching was unbelievable. Wade and Clay gave really good outings, and I’m really proud of them,” Holland said.

Overall, the coach was happy with what he saw from his team and is excited to see what tomorrow’s match-up holds.

“We made some errors today, but we are getting better with each game. They [UFAS] made a lot of errors, and we capitalized on them. That was the first time we have done that this year,” he said. “Hopefully, we can go out and play good baseball to get the sweep tomorrow. Once you get two wins, you have an incentive to keep winning because now you know exactly what you’re going up against.”

The first pitch for tomorrow’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at McCord Field.
