Cameron Struggles In Canyon, Falling 19-7 and 10-9

CANYON, Texas (March 17, 2012) — Cameron lost both games of Saturday’s doubleheader to West Texas, losing game one 19-7 and 10-9 in game two, ensuring a series loss to the Buffs.

The Buffs (14-4, 3-0) used two big innings in game one, seven runs in the fourth and eight in the fifth, to seal the 19-7 victory. Five Cameron pitchers combined to surrender 23 hits to West Texas. Wade Myatt started and took the loss in the game to fall to 1-4 on the season.

Cameron (11-13, 0-3) found some success at the plate in the game. Taylor Lyons reached on an error in the first inning and came around to score on a Brad Blumer double.

Lyons and Blumer both came around to score in the third inning on RBIs by Josh Dawson and Nick Smith. Kevin Lum led off the fourth inning with a walk and stole second. He would come around to score on a single by Lyons to make the score 4-4 at the time.

After the Buffs scored seven runs to take an 11-4 lead, Andy Garcia led off the inning with a double. Kevin Waukau followed with a double of his own to score Garcia. But other than a RBI single to score Waukau, CU could not build any more momentum.

Lyons would score Cameron’s final run of the game in the top of the sixth, as Blumer picked up his second RBI of the game.

Cameron threw Clay Vanderlaan in game two and nearly came away with the victory, carrying a 9-6 lead in to the final inning. The Buffs loaded the bases in the seventh inning, and after a couple of big hits, picked up the game-winning run on a hit batter. The loss drops Vanderlaan’s record to 3-2 on the season.

CU jumped up early as Waukau scored Garcia and Smith on a deep double to center field. West Texas responded with three runs over the second and third innings to make the score 3-2.

The Black and Gold jumped back up with a four-run fourth inning, as the team picked up four hits and took advantage of a costly WT error.

Cameron would score one more run in the sixth, as Smith came around to score on a wild pitch.

The teams will complete the weekend series with a game Sunday afternoon. The opening pitch is set for 1 p.m.
