ABILENE, Texas (March 2, 2012) — Cameron had a hard time in day 1 of the ACU/Whitten Inn Classic, falling to Tarleton State 7-0 in a nine inning game.
Cameron (10-6, 0-0) started the game well, but in the third inning Tarleton (6-5, 0-0) began to pick up on Wade Myatt’s pitching. The Texans were able to plate three runs in the third inning, taking advantage of a Josh Dawson error to score two of the runs unearned.
"They threw a guy ... he was the best pitcher I've seen last two years," said Head Coach Todd Holland. "We matched the total the hits he had allowed all year, just no timely hitting. Against those guys you just need to try to get a run. We couldn't do it. We had two errors that cost us three runs. He was already in third and cruised from there."
Myatt battled and made it through the fourth but allowed a lead-off single, followed by a homerun in the fifth to put CU behind 5-0. James Rhodes came in and finished the inning without allowing another run.
The Texans would plate two more runs in the seventh inning when two early walks came back to haunt Aggie reliever Kyle Ketchum.
Offensively, CU struggled to find its rhythm. The Black and Gold was only able to pick up four hits in the game, scattered through the nine innings.
Cameron will return to the diamond tomorrow with a battle against tournament hosts Abilene Christian at 6 p.m.
