Aggies Battle With No. 18 Rams

SAN ANGELO, Texas (April 21, 2012) — Cameron had a tough time Saturday in San Angelo, dropping a pair of games to the No. 18 Rams, 3-1 and 8-1.

“We are playing one of the top teams in the country,” said Head Coach Todd Holland. “You have to play perfect to win … we didn’t do that today.”

Game one began in Cameron’s favor, with the Aggies leading 1-0 for the first five innings.

Taylor Lyons continued his aggressive approach, getting things started early with a leadoff homerun over the left field fence to make it 1-0.

Clay Vanderlaan took the mound in the game and threw a gem, limiting the offense of the Rams through five innings. But in the sixth inning, the ASU began to zone in. After giving up a leadoff walk, the CU starter allowed a triple, prior to giving way to reliever Aaron Kleekamp. Kleekamp allowed a bunt single, followed by a stolen base and an error to surrender the final two runs of the inning.

Cameron came out attacking with their final three outs. After an Andrew Garcia groundout, Kevin Waukau doubled off the wall. But ASU settled down and recorded the final two outs in succession before CU could muster a comeback.

“We had our chances to win the game,” Holland said. “You have to take advantage of those, especially against a team this good.”

Game two was all ASU, as the Aggies were only able to score one run in the contest. The run came in the third inning on an RBI single by Garcia.

James Rhodes got the nod in game two, but was roughed up to the tune of six hits and five runs in 2.1 innings. Will Thomas, Justin Watley and Jordan Watson each provided the relief, with Thomas and Watson each surrendering runs to the No. 18 Rams.

Prior to dropping a pair of games today, the Aggies won the opening game of the series Friday in the ninth inning with a two-out, full count single by Taylor Lyons, which scored two Aggies and broke a 1-1 tie. Lyons finished drove in all three of Cameron's runs in the game.

Wade Myatt pitched the full nine innings, allowing only five hits and 1 one in a dominant outing.

Cameron has an opportunity to split with ASU Sunday, as the teams are set to do battle at 1 p.m. in the final game of the series.

“We need to win this game,” the coach said. “We have shown that we came hang with this caliber of team. Now, we need to go out and win.”
