LAWTON, Okla. (April 29, 2012) — Cameron celebrated senior day Sunday at McCord Field, taking time to recognize nine seniors playing in their final home game prior to the opening pitch. And while the seniors and the rest of the team played hard, the Aggies fell to Tarleton State 10-2.
“It’s bad for the seniors to go out like that,” said Head Coach Todd Holland. It’s sad for guys who have been here and been on some good teams … you hate to see it go like that.”
The Aggies (22-28, 10-18) got off to a quick start, as Nick Smith came in to score on an Andy Garcia single in the first inning. CU carried that 1-0 through three innings. Wade Myatt took the mound and kept Tarleton State (26-29, 16-12) fooled early in the game. But as was the case in the series, the Texans rallied for a big inning; this time scoring six runs in the fourth inning.
The Black and Gold would add its final run in the eighth inning on a Benshell Gacria bomb over the left field fence. It was the seniors first homerun of the season.
The Texans added two more runs in the sixth and one in both the seventh and the ninth to take the 10-2 and the eighth seed in the LSC Tournament.
Holland said he was proud of the way his team battled this season, but it stings to wait until the last day to find out you won’t be advancing.
“To lose your playoff spot on the last game kind of hurts a little more,” he said. “I just wish these seniors the best of luck and hope they become good men when they get older.”
