Aggies Split In Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas (April 5, 2012) — Cameron had a successful first day on the diamond in Kingsville, dropping game one 11-3 but coming from behind to secure a 7-3 win in game two.

“We played alright today … there were some things we could have done better,” said Head Coach Todd Holland. “But, it’s always good to win on the road. There’s no easy ones.”

Cameron (17-18, 6-8) came out fast in the first game, scoring two runs in the first. Benshell Garcia did the damage with a two-run single, scoring Josh Dawson and Nick Smith.

But Kingsville (21-8, 9-5) would respond on its home field, picking up five runs in the bottom on the first to take a 5-0 lead. The Javelinas chased CU starter Justin Watley in the second, scoring three more runs in the frame. They would add two more in the third of reliever Will Thomas to pull out front 10-2.

The Aggies headed into the final inning trialing 11-2, but could only muster one run, as Kevin LUm blasted a solo shot to left field. The homerun in Lum’s second of the season.

“In the first game we came out and scored two in the first … then we gave it to them,” Holland said. “We made too many mistakes.”

The Black and Gold jumped ahead early in game two as well, as Andy Garcia and Brad Blumer each picked up RBIs to take a 2-0 lead.

Kingsville would keep CU off the board for the next three innings, while scoring three runs of their own on James Rhodes to take a 3-2 lead.

The teams traded runs in the fifth, with Blumer picking up his second RBI on a single to score CU’s lone run, to make the game 4-3, Kingsville.

But in the seventh inning, Cameron’s was able to take advantage of three Javelina errors, while picking up two timely hits to score four runs and take a 7-4 lead. Lum and Dawson reached base after being hit by pitches to start the inning. Andy Garcia then doubled down the left field line, scoring Lum and moving Dawson to third with one out in the inning. Blumer followed with a single to pick up his third RBI of the game, as Dawson came around. An error on the play also allowed Garcia to score and Blumer to move to third. Benshell Garcia singled to score Blumer, plating the Aggies final run of the inning.

Rhodes pitched a strong seventh and eighth before giving way to Aaron Kleekamp for the save, his third of the season. The win was Rhodes fifth of the season, allowing 13 hits, and four runs (two earned), in eight innings.

“Second game we came back and won,” Holland said. “We capitalized on their mistakes. Rhodes pitched alright; it was not his best day. But, he did enough to win.”

The teams will return to the diamond tomorrow with a game at 4 p.m.
