CU baseball falls to Tarleton, 9-6

ABILENE, Texas – Cameron baseball fell to Tarleton State, 9-6 in their first game of the ACU Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Aggies kicked off the scoring in the second inning, after Nick Smith singled, advanced to second on a Tyler Cox single, and then scored on an error by the shortstop.

Tarleton answered in the bottom of the second, first to tie the game with a Colten Boothe solo homerun, then with the bases loaded the Texans hit into a fielder’s choice that scored a run and got an RBI single to put them up 3-1.

Cameron came right back in the third to cut the TSU lead to one after Tomas Galvin doubled and then scored on a Smith RBI single.

Tarleton State answered in the bottom of the third, scoring one run off of a RBI single. The Texans added to their lead in the top of bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs off of two RBI singles and a run scoring groundout to the shortstop.

After scoreless fifth and sixth innings, the Texans would add another run in the seventh inning, scoring a run off of a Brent Hendy wild pitch to bring their lead to 8-2.

The Aggies then got an offensive boost in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cox led off the inning with a single, followed by a Kaz Sanders walk. They were both then driven in on a three run blast to left center from Kenny Acosta. After another Aggie Single and walk, Galvin drove in the fourth run of the inning on a groundout to the shortstop.

The Texans then answered in the bottom of the eighth with a two out RBI single by Alvaro Moreno to give them a three run lead.

The Aggies had to score three in the top of the ninth to keep the game going. Smith led off the inning with a fly ball out to right, which was followed by pop up to the first baseman by Cox. Sanders then struck out looking to end the ball game.

Cameron got a 2-4 and three RBI game from their catcher Kenny Acosta, who hit the homerun to get the Aggies back to within three in the eighth. Additionally, Nick Smith and Tomas Galvin were both 2-5, with a run scored and a RBI each.

The loss goes to Justin Walker (0-2), who went 3.1 innings and gave up seven earned runs and recorded one strikeout.

The Aggies will play the host team, Abilene Christian, Saturday night at 6 p.m.
