Aggies fall 6-3 to Southeastern Oklahoma State

Box Score

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team battled the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm Tuesday afternoon at McCord Field, and lost in a nine inning game, 6-3.

The Aggies are now 11-26 after losing the non-conference game. The Aggies got a solid start from Justin Walker, who went four innings, gave up one earned run and struck out three. He was relieved by Tim Eason, who gave up two earned runs in 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. The loss went to Will Thomas (1-1), who came into the game one out in the seventh and gave up two earned runs and struck out four.

The Cameron offense sputtered as the Aggies only managed five hits in the game. Keaton Green was 1-5 with a run scored and a run driven in, while Kaz Sanders was 1-4 with a run driven in.

Southeastern, who is now 20-17, went with the pitching by committee approach, with their starter going three innings and then three relievers each going two. The pitcher of record was Vance Woodruff (3-7), who went two innings and struck out three, after coming into the game in the sixth inning and leaving with a one run lead in the eighth. Cameron Mann got his eighth save of the season as he came in and pitched a hitless eighth and ninth inning.

The Savage Storm offense was led by Evan Ramsey, who was 3-4 with a run driven in and two runs scored. Additionally, Chevis Springer, Tucker Alexander, and Woodruff had two hits each. Springer and Woodruff both drove in a run, while Springer scored once and Alexander scored twice.

Cameron put the first runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the third, after two and a half scoreless innings to start the game. Dalton Hilliard singled to lead off the inning, stole second and then advanced to third on a Colton Davis sacrifice bunt. Hilliard then scored on a Green single to left.  Green then stole second and then scored on a Sanders single.

The Storm answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning off of a Nick Grimmet single that scored one, but Green threw out the second at the plate on a strong throw from his center field spot.

SE added another run in the top of the fifth and sixth inning to go up 3-2, but the Aggies came back in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at three runs apiece. After two quick outs, Brandon Raidy reached second on dropped foul ball by the center fielder. He then moved to third on a passed ball and then scored on a wild pitch.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Southeastern got two runs on two hits and an Aggie error to take the lead 6-3. CU came up in the bottom of the ninth with Raidy leading off the inning reaching on an error by the second baseman, but Mann set down the next three batters in order to win the game.

Cameron will have their last home series this weekend, April 19-21, as they take on the Rams of Angelo State for four games at McCord Field. The first game will start at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 19.
