Cameron wins in walk off fashion

LAWTON, Okla.—The Cameron University baseball team puts together a three run ninth inning to get a walk off win against the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas Friday afternoon at McCord Field, 5-4.

The Aggies, who are now 9-20 overall and 3-10 in Lone Star Conference play, got a stellar pitching outing from Cody Hudson, who went 7.2 innings, gave up three earned runs, and struck out a career high seven opposing batters. Brian Schwabe came in the game in relief and earned the win, making him 2-3 on the season.

Brad Blumer ended up being the hero of the game, getting a walk off two RBI single to secure the win. Blumer ended the game 2-5 with the two RBI, giving him a team leading 20 RBI’s. Additionally, both Keaton Green and Kevin Wakau had two hits, scored a run, and drove in a run each.

The Javelinas’ (23-11; 6-7 LSC) starter Dallas Ponder went eight innings and struck out nine Aggie batters.

The Aggies kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, getting a double from Green, who advanced to third on a Blumer groundout. Green was then driven in by Wakau on a double of his own.

A&M-Kingsville threatened in the top of the second, loading the bases twice, but Hudson was able to strike out Ben Villafuerte to end the inning. Ponder got a three up three down bottom of the second to keep the score at 1-0.

After a scoreless third inning, Hudson threw a hitless fourth, with the only base runner coming off an Aggie error. In the bottom of the frame CU extended the lead, this time getting a RBI single from Tyler Cox that scored Wakau.

The Javelinas tied the came up with a two run fifth inning. The pitchers controlled the next three frames with TAMUK getting a three up three down fifth and sixth and the Aggies getting a three up three down sixth.

Hudson threw a hitless top of the seventh inning. His teammates threatened in the bottom of the seventh, getting the bases loaded after a double by Thomas Galvin and two walks. Unfortunately, Ponder worked out of it to keep the game tied.

Texas A&M-Kingsville scored one run in both the eighth and ninth innings to put them up 4-2 going into the Aggie half of the ninth.

The Javelinas turned to Jeremy Flores to close out the game, but the Aggies had other plans. Galvin worked out a walk to leadoff and was followed by Kevin Lum reaching on an error by Flores, as Galvin advanced to third. Nick Smith walked to load the bases, with Green coming up to the plate. Green answered with a RBI bloop single to right to score Galvin. Blumer then drove in the game tying and winning runs of the game on a two RBI single to right.

The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, with the first seven inning game to start at 1 p.m. and the second to follow.
