Aggies split doublheader with A&M-Kingsville

CU wins game one 7-2, loses game two 4-7

LAWTON, Okla.—The Cameron University baseball team spit their double header Saturday afternoon with Texas A&M-Kingsville, winning game one 7-2 and losing the second game 4-7.

Cameron’s record is now 10-21 overall and 4-11 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Javelinas are now 24-11 and 7-8 in the LSC.

The Aggies got an excellent start from Aaron Kleekamp in game one. Kleekamp went the complete seven innings, gave up only one earned run, and struck out six TAMUK batters. He is now 3-4 on the season.

Keaton Green led the Aggies with four hits and one RBI, while Kenny Acosta had three hits and two runs driven in, one coming off a solo shot in game one. Additionally, Kevin Wakau was 2-3 with two RBI’s in game one and Thomas Galvin drove in two runs off of two hits on the day.

TAMUK got three hit days from Joe Tallerine, Ben Villafuerte, and Cash Barker. Barker was 3-3 with three RBI’s in game two.

Runs were at a premium through the first four innings, with a scoreless first and second to start the game before A&M-Kingsville got their first run of the ball game in the top of the third inning.

After a scoreless fourth inning, both teams scored a run in their half of the fifth. The Aggies got their run off of Acosta’s fourth home run of the season.

Kleekamp was able get a three up three down top of the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning CU made their run. Green popped up to lead off the inning, and Kaz Sanders reached on a Javelina error. Nick Smith then singled, advancing Sanders to second. Wakau then doubled in his two RBI’s to put the Aggies up by one. Wakau scored on a RBI single by Brad Blumer in the next at bat. Tyler Cox followed that up with a single that scored Blumer. After an Acosta groundout that moved pinch runner Colton Davis to third, Galvin singled in a run that would force the Javelinas to pull their starter Taylor Taska. Kevin Lum was hit by the new pitcher which moved Galvin to second. Green, who led off the inning, came back up to the plate and singled through the right side, scoring Galvin to put CU up 7-2.

Kleekamp finished up the game in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

The Javelinas started game two of the doubleheader with a three run top of the first, which would be the only runs scored in the first three innings.

They added another two runs in the top of the fourth inning that knocked CU’s starter Drew Reidt out of the game. Reliever Steve Matta came in and stranded the bases loaded to get out of the inning. Cameron answered in the bottom of the fourth inning though, getting four runs off of four hits. Blumer and Cox led off the inning with a pair of walks, and were followed by an Acosta RBI single. The Aggie rally continued with a Galvin hard hit single down the left field line that scored Cox. Lum scored Acosta on a sacrifice fly ball to center. Cameron got their fourth run of the inning on a Smith single that scored Galvin.

Both teams got scoreless fifth and sixth inning from their relievers, but the Javelinas struck for two more in the top of the seventh inning to put them up by three. Jeremy Flores came in for TAMUK to close out the game and got a one two three bottom of the seventh to earn the save.

The teams will close out the four game series Sunday at 1 p.m. in a nine inning contest at McCord Field.
