Brighter outlook set for Aggie baseball in 2014

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team will have a lot to prove when they step onto the diamond for the first time this season after a pair of tough seasons.

Following a 12 win season, Cameron didn't get a ton of love within the Lone Star Conference after getting picked tied for last with Eastern New Mexico but it didn't deter Head Coach Todd Holland, who is now entering his second decade as the Aggies skipper on his season outlook.

"I don't put a ton of stock in those preseason polls anyway, and it's been a while since a team picked first in the beginning of the season ended up the champion at the end of the season," said Holland.

"Those polls are great for the media and sports information directors to promote the program, but really I don't get too excited over them."

On this year's roster the Aggies have an entire different make up with 14 new players and the addition of Brady Huston to assist Holland on pitching. They are replacing last year's squad that finished in the bottom of the league in batting average and next to last in runs given up per game.

"It was tough being responsible for 31 guys; he (Huston) can take 14-15 of them and work with them and make sure that they are getting things done and production is a lot better," added Holland.

Adding Huston to the dugout this season will provide guidance to Aggies on the mound. After three seasons at Seminole State as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Huston's throwers went 120-49 and he had 11 players drafted by the Major League Baseball League.

"There are a lot of new faces this season who are out to prove and show that you brought me here for a reason. But right now the biggest challenge is the weather and adapting to it, in the beginning of the week it looked like it was going to be 59 and sunny in Ada on Saturday and now it looks like it will be in the 40s."

The Aggies open their season at East Central with a double-header on Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1 pm. Cameron will then head back to Lawton for their home opener on Tuesday, February 4 at 2 pm with a single nine inning game against Southwestern Oklahoma.
